Shirley Ann Wright, 82, of McHenry passed away peacefully on August 27, 2025, surrounded by her loving family.
Born November 22, 1942, in Waukegan, Illinois, she was the daughter of Richard and Bertha Jager. In grade school, Shirley was an energetic cheerleader at St. Mary's Catholic School, where her bright spirit and enthusiasm shined. She made many dear friends during her school years that lasted throughout her life. Shirley worked after school at their family-owned bakery – Riverside Bakery.
In 1963, Shirley married the love of her life, John Wright. They made their home in Wonder Lake, Illinois, bringing three beautiful children into the world, Gay, JR, and Joy. As a devoted mother, she treasured time with her family. While raising her family, she sold Avon so her schedule could accommodate the family life she desired. As her children became more independent, Shirley switched her professional direction and began a 20+ year career as a bank teller at the Wonder Lake State Bank, where her kindness and cheerful spirit left a lasting impression on colleagues and customers alike.
She had passion for knitting and crocheting blankets for her family. The only time she put down her knitting needles, thankfully, was when she became highly animated as she cheered on the Chicago Bears to victory! Her competitive spirit was also on full display at the many Bingo halls that Shirley visited.
Her love of summer led John & Shirley to spend their winters in Bonita Springs, Florida. There Shirley built cherished friendships spending time playing cards, trains, and sharing long poolside conversations. Above all, she enjoyed visits from her children and grandchildren which brought her endless joy and filled her days with laughter.
Shirley shared 61 wonderful years of marriage with her beloved husband, John, who preceded her in death earlier this year. She is survived by her bother Rick (Jeannie), and by her children, Gay (Mike), JR (Christine), and Joy (Tom). She delighted in her grandchildren Zach (Kevin), Christopher (Allyson), Josh, Jordyn, Mary Kate (Ryan), Jacob, Tess, Jared, George, and Bella, great grandchildren, Charley Rose and Miles Joesph.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, September 3, 2025, from 5-8 pm at the Justen Funeral Home & Crematory, 3700 W. Charles Miller Road, McHenry, IL. A funeral service will be held on September 4, 2025, at 1 pm at The Church of Holy Apostles, 5211 Bull Valley Road, McHenry, IL.
Her life was a blessing, her memory a treasure, and her love a gift beyond measure. She will be fondly remembered for her love, laughter, optimism, support, and the joy she brought to family and friends.
