It is with heavy hearts and profound sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Shon Robert Hamilton, cherished husband, devoted father, beloved son, amazing uncle, loving brother, proud papaw, and dedicated firefighter. Shon departed from this world on January 11, 2024, while working on his beloved homeland, leaving behind a legacy of love, courage, and selflessness.
Shon was a charismatic and hardworking individual who left an indelible impact on the lives he touched. With a passion for public service, he bravely served as a firefighter for many years and displayed unwavering courage in the face of danger. Shon's dedication to protecting the lives and property of others garnered immense respect from his colleagues and the community he served.
Shon Hamilton began as an Explorer at the Piedmont Park Fire Department in Greenville County in 1993. In 1995, he became a volunteer at the Belmont Fire District and in 1996, became a career Firefighter with the South Greenville Fire District. A year later, Shon was offered the Shift Officer position at Belmont Fire Department and was employed there until 2000. Shon went to Gantt Fire District in 2000 where he worked until 2007. During Shon's entire time in Greenville County, he was also a member of the Greenville County Emergency Response Team as a Hazmat Technician, Rescue Technician, and a Rescue Diver. In 2007, Shon was hired as one of the first Firefighters of the newly created Oconee County Emergency Services Department, providing paid firefighters across the county. Shon served as a Captain/Shift Commander in this position as well as ultimately filling in for the Battalion Chief and Training Officer.
In 2008, Shon joined South Carolina Task Force 1 (SC-TF1), the state's Type I US&R team. Though he began as a rescue technician, he progressed through the ranks and also joined the SC Helicopter Aquatic Rescue Team (SC-HART) and served as a Helicopter Rescue Technician and Rescue Team Leader. In 2017, Shon was hired to be the fulltime Section Chief for SC-TF1 where he served until he retired on August 31, 2023. Shon has received numerous awards over the course of his career for unit citations, life saving awards, rescue swimmer awards and more.
Apart from his noble profession, Shon held his family extremely close to his heart. His devoted wife, Stacie, was his rock and his partner in life. Together, they built a foundation of love, support, and unwavering devotion. Shon and Stacie were high school sweethearts and shared 34 amazing years together, 28 of those years as husband and wife. As the news of his grandchildren's impending arrival reached his ears, he eagerly looked forward to embracing his role as a "Pa Paw" to Tucker and Harper Thompson, finding joy in the thought of guiding them through life's adventures and cherishing every precious moment with them.
His legacy will continue on with his wife, Stacie; their two precious children, Lindsey Thompson and her husband, Zach, and Austin Hamilton and Belle Kleffman; his future grandchildren, Tucker and Harper Thompson; his loving mother and dad, Linda and Mark Holbrook; his father, Robert Hamilton and wife, Dennis; his adoring sister, Heather Henderson and her husband, Ray; nephew, Hunter Caudle; maternal grandmother, Mary Fortion; and countless other loving family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Alvie Fye.
