Eugene Burns Whitcomb, 89, beloved husband of Irma Whitcomb, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, February 25, 2026.

Born in Fredonia, Kansas, Eugene was the son of the late Earnest and Lola Burns Whitcomb.

He married the love of his life, Irma, and together they built a life rooted in love and devotion. After their marriage, they lived in Burlington, Kansas, before moving to Greenville in 1966, where they raised a beautiful family and created a lifetime of cherished memories.

Eugene, affectionately known as Gene, was a faithful member of City View First Baptist Church. He enjoyed camping and traveling, loved working in his garden, and found great joy in life's simple pleasures.

Above all, Gene treasured time spent with his family, whom he considered his greatest gift and proudest accomplishment. He was a devoted husband, loving father, and cherished grandfather.

Gene was a man of strong work ethic, deep faith, and unwavering family values-qualities he faithfully passed down to his loved ones. His legacy of love, faith, and integrity will continue to live on through the family he so dearly loved.

In addition to his beloved wife of 62 years, he is survived by son, Larry Whitcomb (Andrea); daughter, Peggy Lesley (Randy); grandson, Tyler Whitcomb (Alyssa); granddaughters, Rebecca Lesley, Amanda Lesley and Kinslee Whitcomb; step-granddaughter, Hayleigh DeMaria; brothers, George Whitcomb (Sharon), Leon Whitcomb (Patsy), Paul Whitcomb (Deb), and David Whitcomb; and sister, Lida Lawson.

He was preceded in death by his infant son, James David Whitcomb; brothers, Jeremiah "Jerry" Whitcomb and Carlyle Whitcomb; sister-in-law, Judy Whitcomb; and brother-in-law, Roy Lawson.

A visitation will be held Wednesday, March 04, 2026, from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Thomas McAfee Funeral Homes, Northwest. The funeral service will be Thursday, March 5, 2026, at 12:00 p.m. at City View First Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Graceland Cemetery West .

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to City View First Baptist Church, 2300 W. Blue Ridge Dr, Greenville, SC 29617.
