It is with heavy hearts and profound respect that we announce the passing of our beloved Sidney Earl Smith, lovingly known as "Papa 6" or "Pawpaw," on January 11, 2026. Born on December 28, 1936, in
Catawba, NC, Sidney was a man of immense courage, unwavering loyalty, and infectious love. His radiant spirit and reliable nature touched the lives of everyone around him, leaving an indelible mark that will continue to inspire us for years to come.
A devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, Sidney's world revolved around his family. He was a proud member of the Luella Baptist Church in
Locust Grove, GA, where his faith guided him in his roles as Sunday school teacher, men's conference manager, and choir member. "As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord" (Joshua 24:15) was a verse Sidney lived by and instilled in his loved ones. He had a zest for life that was reflected in his favorite pastimes, which included auto racing, football, baseball, and even playing in the over-40 softball league in Korea.
Sidney's courage and commitment extended beyond his personal life. Following a distinguished military career as a Major in the U.S. Army, he retired in 1982, leaving a legacy of honor and service. His bravery earned him multiple recognitions and medals, embodying the essence of a true hero. After retirement, Sidney continued to serve his community through the American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), AVVBA along with 9th Infantry Recon Division reunions, Alpha Company reunions and C. Company Platoon reunions. His unwavering dedication to his country was a testament to his resolute spirit and love for his fellow citizens.
Sidney is survived by his loving wife, Anna Smith; his stepchildren, Diana Bartlett, Douglas (Melody) Smith; his step-grandchildren, Daniel (Jessica) Cohran, Kimberly (Andrew) Scott, Christy Cooper, William (Amy) Smith; and his grandson, Jeffrey Hahn, along with 8 Great-Grandchildren that he loved with his whole heart. He was preceded in death by his parents, Sidney and Pervie Smith, and his daughter, Susan Hahn.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, January 29, 2026, at the Midlothian Funeral Home located at 200 East Avenue East,
Midlothian, Texas, 76065, at 10:00am CST. The funeral service will follow at 11:30am CST, at the same location. Sidney will be laid to rest with military honors at the Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery at 1:30pm CST.
