Silas Salyer of Underhill, Vermont passed away unexpectedly on June 27th, 2024. A recent graduate of Mount Mansfield Union High School, Silas was excited to start his next chapter in life.
Silas lived a life of adventure, of working hard and being of service to others. He developed a passion very early on for everything outdoors. His adventures included hunting, fishing, camping, hikes along new trails as well as leisurely kayak or canoe trips down a river.
Silas was looking forward to a career in HVAC, a career he began to pursue during his time at the Center for Technology, Essex and employment opportunities during the summer. Silas worked for a short time as a dishwasher at Smuggler's Notch and learned what he did not want to do for a living.
Silas was the kind of person that people simply wanted to talk to. His contagious smile and the twinkle in his eyes could captivate any room he was in. The way Silas lived his life is a model for everyone. He was never petty, never needing things to be his way, never spoke a cross word to anyone and never waisted a single breath on gossip. Silas desired to lift others up by being of service to them.
Silas never asked for help but was more than happy to help others, no matter the need. Whether it was gas money for a friend, a ride to work, help with home repairs or simply sitting and listening to someone who needed to be heard. Silas was led by his heart to do what was right. This desire to help others was not only seen in his response to a request for his help from another, it was seen in the proactive manner in which he kept his heart open to all who came to know him.
To Silas, loyalty was not a question or an option. His loyalty to family, friends and the community was a product of the love he had for them. Love by definition is to will the good of others, and Silas embodied this truth
Silas will be missed by all who love him and who hold him in their hearts. What he has left hidden in our hearts will take a lifetime to discover, but that's okay. For like Silas, it will be a life well lived.
