Simmons G. Stephens, Jr., a beloved member of the community, passed away peacefully on February 12, 2025, surrounded by his family. Born on January 4, 1943, in Lumberton, NC, he lived a life rich with love, passion, and connection to those around him.

Simmons known as "Steve" or “Simmy” to his family and friends, dedicated a significant part of his career to Burlington Industries, from which he eventually retired. His humble demeanor and kindness left a lasting impression on his colleagues and friends, who often spoke of his gentle nature and ability to connect with others.

A man of faith, Steve was an active member of Hope Baptist Church. There, he shared his love of music as a member of the church choir and the men’s quartet. His commitment to the church extended beyond music; he also served as a Sunday School teacher, inspiring countless individuals through his teachings and devotion.

Steve found immense joy in spending time with his family. He cherished moments with his wife of over 54 years, Sherry Stephens, and took great pride in his role as a father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He leaves behind a loving daughter, Sherry Truitt (Rodney), and grandchildren, Christopher Truitt (Jacquelyn), and Jessica Willard (Clayton). Steve delighted in watching his great-grandchildren—Camber Truitt, Dakota Willard, Dalton Willard, Aleister Willard, and Atticus Willard—grow and thrive.

Outside of his family and faith, Steve was passionate about running, taking up the sport in his early fifties. His determination and discipline led him to compete in three marathons, a testament to his dedication and resilience. He was also fond of fishing and hunting, activities that brought him closer to nature and provided opportunities for time spent with friends and family.

He was preceded in death by his father, Simmons Stephens, Sr., his mother, Alice Ellis, and his stepfather, Nelson Patton; sisters, Carrie Stephens Small and Phyllis Patton Grigg, and his brother, Wayne Patton. He is survived by his sisters, Dawn Patton Genest (Tom), Janet Patton Foushee, and Juanita Patton Currin (Pat).

A memorial service will be held 3:30PM Friday, February 21, 2025 at Rockhill Baptist Church, Burlington, NC with Rev. Justin T. Brown and Rev. Frederick H. Bunts, PhD officiating. The family will receive friends from 2:00-3:15 PM prior to service.
