Carlton "Skip" Maas, 84, of Oskaloosa, passed away Sunday, April 28, 2024, at the Mahaska Health Hospice Serenity House in Oskaloosa.
Carlton Hewitt Maas, son of Everett Lester and Alvera Evelyn (Hewitt) Maas, was born December 22, 1939, in Spencer, Iowa. Skip, as he was soon called, grew up in Arnolds Park, Iowa, where his father was superintendent of schools, and he worked in the family's drive-in diners and cafes. After graduating in 1958, Skip enrolled at William Penn College, embarking on a career in Industrial Arts Education. While at William Penn, he met Karen Harvey, and they married on December 22, 1963. The following fall, he began his 34-year junior high industrial arts instructor career. In addition to his teaching responsibilities, Skip coached basketball, track, and football and was the athletic supervisor at the junior high. He also officiated in basketball, football, baseball, and softball games and was selected to officiate in Iowa State Football Championship games. Skip served as the Head Timer for the Osky Relays for more than 50 years. The Boy's 4 x 100 was named "The Skip Maas Relay" in honor of his years of dedicated service to the Osky Relays.
Skip was an Elk's Lodge member and enjoyed fishing trips with family and friends to Bluffy Lake in Ontario, Canada, for many years.
His family includes his wife, Karen; and three children: Scott (Wendy) Maas of Ottumwa, Shelly (Tim) Lewis of Hiawatha, and Jim (Kari) Maas of Cedar Rapids; seven grandchildren: Taylor (Marissa) Maas of Ottumwa, Alec (fiance – Alexis) Maas of Ottumwa, Riley (Gina) Maas of Ottumwa, Courtni (Drew) Heitland of North Liberty, Matthew Lewis of Des Moines, Hayden Maas of Cedar Rapids, and Paige Maas of Cedar Rapids; three great-grandchildren: Brooks, Mila, and Kasen; and his twin sister, Carmen DeKoster of Okoboji.
In addition to his parents, Skip was preceded in death by a brother, Charles.
Graveside memorial services will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, May 2, 2024, at Forest Cemetery; please use the cemetery's North Ninth Street entrance. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m., Wednesday, at Langkamp Funeral Chapel & Crematory; the family will greet visitors from 4-6:30 p.m. Memorial contributions can be made to the Oskaloosa Booster Club to support the boys and girls track and field teams.
