Sondra Sue "Sonie" Underwood

Sondra Sue "Sonie" Underwood went to be with our Lord and Savior July 28, 2025. She loved God and talked of her passing as "the ultimate vacation". Born in Alexandria, IN in 1938, she was the daughter of Howard and Emaline Underwood who resided in Linville Land Harbor in the 1980's. She taught secretarial classes and Computer Applications at Avery County High School from 1981-2001. Before computers, she began her teaching career in Dunedin High School in 1968 teaching typewriting and shorthand. Sondra enjoyed being a pioneer in the computer age while teaching at St. Petersburg "Jr" College, Clearwater, FL. She also taught her hobby of stained glass for Avery and Watauga counties recreation departments and in her home in Banner Elk, NC. After turning 80, she taught her craft at Mayland Community College.
She graduated from Clearwater High School in 1956; attended Florida State University until 1958, was a member of Delta Zeta sorority and Cotillion Dance Association. Later she graduated from University of South Florida with a BA and an MA in Business Ed. However, she remained a loyal FSU fan the rest of her life. In the 1970's, she owned a 1929 Reo and was the secretary for the Veteran Motor Car Club of America in Dunedin, FL. Later in the 1990's she was a member of three Country/Western dance groups and performed in various venues including television show "Club Dance".
Sondra enjoyed being active in her community of Avery County. She attended Arbor Dale Presbyterian Church and served on their Session; volunteered for Avery's Habitat for Humanity and served on the board as well as President. She also volunteered for Feeding Avery Families since 2005 (with a five year break while being caregiver to her great-grandchildren, Claude & Molly Hollingsworth).
Sondra leaves behind two daughters, Tara Segin and Tracy Adolphson, a foster son, John Isaacson, two sons-in-law, Scott Segin and Cliff Adolphson, five grandchildren, Ashley, Alexis, Chad, Sierra and Savannah, 9 great-grandchildren; sister, Tina S. Shore, niece Chelsey Cook and great-nephew David. Cremation arrangements made by Winterville Cremation & Funeral Services, Winterville, NC. The family will gather for a small, intimate memorial at a later date.
