SIDNEY, MAINE
Sonia M. Veilleux, a devoted wife and mother of three, passed away Monday, May 26, 2025 at the Alfond Center for Health in Augusta at the age of 77.
Sonia was born on December 2, 1947, a daughter of the late Robert and Marielle (Tardif) Dumas. She was a loving mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, known for her selflessness, kindness, and unwavering strength. Throughout her life, she touched many hearts with her generosity, compassion, and gentle spirit.
She grew up in Augusta and went to Cony High School. Her younger years took her to New York where she was deeply connected to the music, culture, and ideals of the era, including Woodstock and marches led by Martin Luther King, Jr. Upon returning to Maine and reconnecting with a former classmate, she married Claude F. Veilleux on June 30, 1973. Together, they raised two sons, Erik and Chris, and one daughter, Jennifer, in Sidney, Maine.
Sonia's life was a testament to hard work and a selfless dedication to her family as she tirelessly worked for many years at both the Edwards Manufacturing Company and the Augusta Civic Center until her retirement.
She had a passion, first and foremost, for her children as she was a loyal supporter of all their endeavors and sporting events shuttling them from hockey and baseball games to gymnastics meets. She was also a fierce supporter of her nieces and nephews' events, cheering them on at their games and auto races, often accompanied by her mother. Sonia loved playing cards and beano, rooting for her beloved Boston sports teams, particularly the Celtics, and listening to music ranging from Oldies But Goodies to her favorite long-haired band, Bon Jovi. A seafood enthusiast, she took every opportunity to order her favorite lobster roll.
Sonia was a lifetime communicant of St. Augustine Catholic Church and an active member of the Cushnoc Senior Citizens.
She was predeceased by her parents, Robert and Marielle, and her husband, Claude who passed in 2019.
Sonia is survived by her children: her son, Erik Veilleux and his wife, Beth and their two children, Lila and Logan; her daughter, Jennifer Ethem and her husband Niyazi and their two children, Eli and Penelope; her son, Chris Veilleux and his two children, Jade and Noah; great grandchildren: Luna, Lilith, and Nova; a brother, George Dumas and his wife Sharon, and a sister, Diane Clark and her husband John; as well as several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, June 14th at 10:00 am at St. Augustine Catholic Church, 75 Northern Ave., Augusta, ME 04330. Burial will follow at Holy Family Cemetery, Townsend Rd., Augusta, ME 04330.
