Sonny Smith Obituary
Sonny was born on March 18, 1966, to John "Edwin" and Delores A. Smith. He grew up in Mint Hill and attended school in Mecklenburg County. Sonny enjoyed different trades throughout his life; painting, sheetrock and construction. He was an all around handyman, but his favorite job was climbing towers for Sky High Towers. He said he felt closer to God with that job. Sonny was always happy to help his neighbor in need.
Sonny will be forever remembered for his loud contagious laugh, his beautiful smile, his quick wit, his huge heart; and his love for his family, friends and animals of all kinds. Most of all, he will be remembered for his love for the Lord.
Left to cherish his memories are his mother, Delores Smith; his sons Jeffery Duncan and John Smith; grandchildren: Dakoda Given, Gage Duncan, Caleb Connell and Lana Smith; great granddaughter Leliani Connell; sisters Tara Beck (Jerry) and Johnette Harris (Jr); nieces Jessica Dennis (Jr) and Dawn Barnhill (Thomas); great nephews James and Jacob Dennis and Sam Barnhill; and the brother his parents never gave him, Tim Barnes (Bonnie). He also leaves behind his faithful; fur babies, Lil Buddy (Goober), Lady and Mike; numerous aunts and uncles, many cousins and lifelong friends that were more like siblings.
Sonny was preceded in death by his son Charlie Paul Connell; his father John "Edwin" Smith; the brother his parents did not give him, Wayne Barnes; paternal grandparents Earnest and Molly Smith, and maternal grandparents Price and Elizabeth Crutchfield.
Sonny's family has given the family of Lowe-Neddo Funeral Home the privilege of caring for him and for them. A memorial service will be held at 4 pm on Saturday, December 7, 2024, in the funeral home chapel, 4715 Margaret Wallace Road, Matthews, NC 28105. The family will receive friends after the service.

He was a very respectful teacher who showed me a different way to see life. Thought me how to use more than just my muscles how to control my enter thoughts as well as keep my demons at bay an to bind at my will. Show me how to reach a higher form or enlightenment find my higher power in a different light at same as remaining teachable. He was a true mentor to a lost soldier who just came home with so many demons took me under his wing like a little brother to the amazement of so many. Took to someone so different but showed me love when I had lost everything an had nothing but hate. Saved my life truly be missed mentor
