Sonya Bracy Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by McClam Funeral Home - New Haven on Dec. 31, 2025.
On Wednesday, December 24, 2025, the Lord called His beloved daughter Sonya Bernea Bracy to her heavenly home. Sonya was born on September 29, 1979, in Cheraw, SC, to Sandra Bracy and Richard Rivers.

At the age of five, Sonya and her family relocated to New Haven, CT, where she attended New Haven Public Schools. In 1998, she graduated from Hamden High School in Hamden, CT, where she was active in sports. After high school, Sonya established a long-term career working in the medical field. She had a passion for taking care of people. She worked as a CNA and phlebotomist for many years and was certified as a Primary Care Assistant.

Sonya's pride and joy was her daughter Taijha, whom she adored. Sonya also loved the Lord, and she gave her life to Christ at an early age. She was a longstanding member of Ebenezer Chapel located in New Haven, CT. Before joining Ebenezer Chapel, Sonya was a member of Mount Hope Temple United Holy Church in New Haven where she sang in the choir, attended Sunday School, and was active in the Youth Ministry. She was instrumental in leading her family to the Lord. Sonya believed in the importance of education. She also loved to shop and enjoyed looking her best from hair to nails and make-up to outfits. She also enjoyed listening to good music, especially Gospel music. In her youth, Sonya was very active on the Mod Squad drill team of New Haven.

Sonya is preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, Lawson and Peiry Lee Bracy, stepfather Bruce Kinsler, special cousin Tara Heyward, Uncle Lomax Lawrence, and a slew of aunts and uncles.

Sonya leaves to cherish her memory daughter Taijha Bracy Kinney; fiancé Jamel "Ty" Wright; Mother Sandra Bracy of Hamden, CT; sisters Alicia Kinsler of Hamden, CT, and Sheila Bryant and Sherry Bryant of New Haven, CT; special aunt Betty (Mama) Lawrence; special brother Terrence Lawrence of Hamden, CT; and a host of other relatives and friends.
