Sophia Afet Shields, known affectionately as Afet by her friends and family, passed away peacefully on March 4, 2026, in Freeport, Florida. Born on April 23, 1943, in the historic coastal city of Izmir, Turkey, Afet's journey through life was as vibrant and spirited as her birthplace.

Afet's story is one of love, adventure, and kindness. Her radiant smile and warm heart brought light to everyone she met. She was a beacon of love and a testament to the power of living life to the fullest. Afet's husband, Richard Shields, whom she lovingly supported throughout his career in the United States Army, preceded her in death on May 8, 2011. They shared a bond that was both tender and enduring, and their love story remains an inspiration to all who knew them.

A true citizen of the world, Afet and Richard's passion for travel saw them setting up home in various places, including a memorable decade in Saudi Arabia. This experience broadened her horizons and enriched her understanding of diverse cultures, which she embraced with open arms. In 1997, Afet and Richard chose to settle in the beautiful region of Northwest Florida, where they found a community that quickly became their extended family.

As we celebrate Afet's life, we hold close the memories that she has left behind-a legacy of love, kindness, and adventure that will continue to inspire. She will be deeply missed, but her spirit will live on in the hearts of all who were blessed to know her. Afet's life was a journey well-traveled, and the footprints she left on this earth are indelible.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, March 14, 2026 at 11 am with a visitation beginning at 10:00 am. The family invites friends to bring photo's of your memories with Afet to share. Expressions of condolences and sympathy may be sent to the family at www.mclaughlingtwincities.com.
