Spencer Lavern Jeffers passed away on August 9, 2025, in Marshfield, Wisconsin, where he had made his home for the past 30+ years. He was born on October 19, 1936, near Sparta, Wisconsin, to John and Emma (Reise) Jeffers.
Spencer was raised on farms in the La Farge area and graduated from La Farge High School in 1954. He proudly served in the U.S. Army for two years, stationed in Germany.
A man of many talents and a tireless work ethic, Spencer's career journey reflected both determination and adaptability. In his early days working on the farm, helping neighbors, worked at cheese factory, and also picking up and hauling milk.
Spencer worked in an automotive parts store in Viroqua and Prairie du Chien and quickly advanced to managing a retail store in Richland Center for a large retailer (like Farm Fleet). Later, he found success in sales, maintenance, and ultimately as the owner of a trucking company.
Spencer's longest and most distinguished career was in Marshfield as a long-haul semi-truck driver with Roehl Transport for over 30+ years, where he drove over 3+ million safe miles, achieving many awards and trophies, including driver of the year, several safe driver awards and just to name a few. Even after retirement, he still worked for Roehl, recovering abandoned trucks left on the road. It is estimated that Spencer logged more than 5+ million miles in total-visiting all 48 contiguous states and parts of Canada.
Spencer had an extraordinary ability to navigate cross-country and provide directions from memory alone, as if he carried a map in his mind. In his later years, he worked part-time at a golf course, happily tending to the fairways.
Outside of work, Spencer found great joy in sports and the outdoors. He was an avid golfer, playing in numerous tournaments and leagues, bowling, pool, and softball. A passionate outdoorsman, Spencer enjoyed hunting deer, bear, geese, and pheasants, and spent many cherished days trout, lake, ice fishing, but his all-time favorite was deer hunting.
Spencer was a passionate football enthusiast who had been devoted to the Green Bay Packers since the age of 16. His loyalty to the team ran deep, and his love for the game never wavered.
He also loved playing cards and games, particularly cribbage, where his quick mind and sharp instincts often led to victory. He valued time spent playing with friends, sharing laughter, and swapping stories. Spencer had the innate ability to look at cards instantly, counting the points.
Spencer loved people and will be remembered for his honesty, integrity, generous spirit, quick wit, and gift for conversation. He had a way of making people feel welcome-always ready with a joke, a helping hand, or wise advice. His laugh, kindness, and warmth will be deeply missed.
He is survived by his sister Joanne Liftin of Tomah; brother Dwain (Regina) of La Farge; children Steven (Wen) of Dallas, Texas, Cary (Linda) of West Bend, Cheryl of Marshfield, and Crystal of La Crosse; granddaughter Lia of Dallas; and grandchildren, nieces Vickie (Tim) of Viroqua, Linda (Rick) of Florida, nephew Lyle (Sherry) of Tomah, nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers Clarence and Laverne; and brother-in-law Gus Liftin.
A celebration of Spencer's life will be held in Marshfield, Sept 20th at Swamp Bar from 12:00 pm to 4:00 pm (hosted by Cheryl). In future, in La Farge, with burial to follow at Bear Creek Cemetery, La Farge.
