Spyros Doumakis, a beloved figure in the culinary community and cherished friend to many, passed away on Tuesday, February 10, 2026, in Asheville, North Carolina, at the age of 81. Born on July 12, 1944, in Sykia, Greece, a province of Laconia, Spyros was the son of George and Mary Doumakis and was raised in a close-knit rural farming community. He was one of nine children and grew up immersed in the traditions of beekeeping and livestock farming, instilling a sense of hard work and dedication that would characterize his life. Spyros's father instilled in him a deep commitment to the Greek Orthodox faith, and it was this foundation that guided him throughout his life.

Spyros was not only a nurturing figure to his family and community, but he also forged a successful career as a skilled chef, contributing his culinary talents to esteemed restaurants in Asheville and Montreal, Canada. Most recently, he lent his expertise to the Cornerstone Grill in Asheville and dedicated countless hours volunteering with ABCCM at the SonRise Outreach, where he served many people in need on Patton Avenue.

His journey through life was marked by his deep love for people, especially children. He had a unique way of connecting with the young ones he encountered, often carrying fresh one-dollar bills folded into art or small toys to share with them. Spyros had a heart of gold, and his kindness left an indelible mark on those he met.

An active member of the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in Asheville, he was deeply appreciative of his priest, Father Capones, and the visitors who came to see him at the nursing facility. His faith was a cornerstone of his life, as exemplified by his participation in a home prayer service just days before his passing. Additionally, he celebrated his US Citizenship, which he attained 15 years ago, with great pride.

Spyros enjoyed physical activity, regularly attending the YMCA in his later years, where he forged many friendships and remained an engaged member of the community. His love for travel took him across the United States, Canada, and Europe, enriching his life with diverse experiences and cherished memories.

Spyros's passing is felt deeply by his longtime friend, caretaker, and professional associate, Dr. Emery John Lorntz, as well as his personal caregiver, Marjorie Freeman, and her family, who devotedly attended to his needs. He is lovingly remembered by those whose lives he touched, including a generation of children who were recipients of his thoughtful gestures.

Spyros Doumakis leaves behind a legacy of love, community service, and culinary excellence. His memory will forever live on in the hearts of those who knew him and in the many lives he enriched throughout his journey.

A funeral service will be held at the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in Asheville on Thursday, February 12, 2026, at 9 AM with the community gathering to celebrate his remarkable life. Burial will follow at the Green Hills Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, 227 Cumberland Ave, Asheville, NC 28801.
