Sister Kathleen Mary Moross, RSM

Mercy Sister Kathleen Mary Moross (91) passed away very peacefully Sunday evening March 29, 2026 at St. Bernardine Home, Fremont after a brief illness of lung cancer.

She was so proud to share with people that she was born in Sandusky, Ohio – how it was situated so perfectly on Lake Erie. Another beloved aspect of the town was its history for the Sisters of Mercy as Frances Warde, who brought the first Sisters of Mercy to the United States, stopped in Sandusky on her stagecoach travels in 1846.

After graduating from Toledo Mercy Hospital School of Nursing (now Mercy College of Ohio) she worked at Mercy Hospital until entering the Sisters of Mercy in 1959. While in formation she completed her bachelor's degree at Edgecliff College, Cincinnati.

Sister Kathleen was grateful her request to minister in the Toledo area was granted. In 1964 she returned to Mercy Hospital Toledo and spent the next 28 years there. She held various positions of responsibility: nurse, department supervisor, staff development director, health care coordinator, vice president of nursing services, vice president of support services. In the midst of ministry she earned her master’s in administration at Notre Dame University in 1982.

Sr. Kathleen was an avid sports fan. In 1992-93 she enjoyed a sabbatical at Notre Dame University. Attending the Fighting Irish home football games was a bonus. The following year, she embarked on a new ministry as housing manager for Charlescrest I & II where she developed a close relationship with the seniors in her care.

Even with all her duties she found time to play – golf. Her golf partners compared parts of her life to aspects of the game. “She could read the green well.” – She was perceptive and good at judging situations. “Always under par.” – She performed above expectations. “She kept her eye on the ball.” – She stays focused and goal oriented. Her other favorite pastime was her cat. She wanted no question as to her care for her cat as the sign on her door read “Cats are people too.”

She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Katherine (Drewyer) Moross; siblings, Alice, William, Joseph Moross, Virginia Pollard, Florence Risner. She is survived by nephews Ron and Joe Hummel, niece Pam Whittaker; Balduff cousins and her Sisters in the Mercy Community.

Services will be held at St. Bernardine Home, 1220 Tiffin Street, Fremont, Ohio: Tuesday, March 31, 2:30 Welcoming Service; Wednesday, April 1, 11am funeral liturgy followed by burial at Our Lady of the Pines Cemetery.

The Welcome Service, Funeral Mass and Burial will be livestreamed via her obituary on the funeral home's webpage. Arrangements are under the care of Herman - Karlovetz Funeral Home & Crematory, Fremont. Online condolences may be expressed at www.hermanfh.com
