Obituary published on Legacy.com by David E. Desmond & Son Funeral Home - Bath on Feb. 3, 2026.
Stanley Doughty Sr. of Phippsburg passed at the age of 91 on February 1st, 2026. Stanley was a big man who lived a big life. Those around him were never left wanting for conversation or a laugh. His quick humor and genuine care for those around him coupled with an unmatched strength and stubbornness made Stanley a local icon who will be missed by everyone lucky enough to know him.
Stanley was born in
Bath, Maine in 1934 to Ralph and Mildred Doughty of Phippsburg. Growing up in Phippsburg with his three siblings (Harry, Helena, and Joanie), Stanley enjoyed the outdoors and getting into just the right amount of mischief. He attended the one room school house at Phippsburg Center and graduated from Morse High School in 1954.
While at Morse, he started dating his future wife Nancy McBrine. Together they would have four children: Michelle, Stanley (Buddy) Jr, Cathy, and Michael. Some of the family's fondest memories were from Stanley's time in the Coast Guard tending Brown's Head Light on Vinalhaven. Once retired from the Coast Guard Stanley brought the family back to Phippsburg and worked for Doughty and Sons helping maintain the roads he loved to drive (very slowly as anyone who was ever stuck behind him leaving town knows).
Stanley and Nancy loved road trips and were known to drive hours for a good lunch (though Nancy's cooking was his favorite) and spend weekends "gallivanting" all over New England. The couple never flew for vacations as the Coast Guard helicopters were like "damned tin cans" and left Stanley happy to stay on the ground and closer to home. Nancy was a devoted co-pilot and didn't complain even during a trip to Connecticut via the breakdown lane because everyone else was driving too fast.
When Stanley became a grandfather and later great grandfather, he unlocked a new level of devotion. "Bampie" or the "Bampster" could calm even the fussiest baby into a nap between the suspenders on his broad chest. As those babies grew, Stanley attended as many of their events as he possibly could. The "Bampie" van, with Mammie riding shotgun, made its way all over the state for games, performances, and special events.
While the stories that could be told about Stanley are numerous enough to fill a novel, the most important one is of his strength. He unflinchingly stepped in as caregiver for Nancy after a stroke left her in a wheelchair. He powered on after the loss of his wife, his son Buddy, his daughter Michelle, son-in-law David, and grandson David Jr. At 91 years old Stanley had cheated death like a cat with 9 lives, perhaps why he felt so connected to his feline pal "Chummy." Down to his last words his character stayed in tact requesting "another round" when he was thirsty and looking for money to buy the great grandkids ice cream.
Stanley's family has no doubt he has rejoined those who went before him and taken his rightful spot at the head of the table.
