Arthur Howard Vaughan, 76, of Pownal, Maine, went home to be with the Lord on January 31, 2026, surrounded by his loving family at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House, in Scarborough, Maine.
Arthur was born on October 2, 1949, in
Brunswick, Maine, to Howard and Dorothy Vaughan of Gray, Maine. He grew up with his half brothers Luther Harley, Lawrence Harley, Eugene Harley, and his twin brother Arnold Vaughan. Arthur attended Gray/New Gloucester High School and proudly served in the United States Army from 1969 to 1971. He was a welder for 50 years until he retired.
Arthur had a lifelong passion for cars. He loved competing in and attending car shows, and countless hours were spent washing and waxing his vehicles. It became a family joke that he loved his truck more than his wife, so if his truck was ever dirty, everyone made sure he knew about it. He also enjoyed playing softball, going fishing, and watching racing-along with football and baseball whenever racing wasn't on.
After retirement, Arthur continued to enjoy fishing and spent many joyful hours in Florida hand-feeding the white squirrels. He had a love for country music, both singing and listening, and never missed an opportunity to share a good joke. Arthur treasured every moment spent with his family.
Fifty-four years ago, his father Howard encouraged him to meet his twin brother Arnold's babysitter while home on leave from the Army. One year later, he and Debbie were married, and together they built a life filled with love, laughter, and family.
Arthur is survived by his wife of 53 years, Debbie Vaughan; two sons, Keith Vaughan and his life partner Tonya Gifford of Pownal, Maine, and Kevin Vaughan and his wife Tina of Lake Wales, Florida; He also leaves a son Jason Michaud of Florida whom he loved like his own. He leaves six grandchildren, Cody (Desiree), Tyler, Jackson, Kaila, Kassie, and Averill; and four great-grandchildren, Ava, Charlie, Leland, and Nico.
He also leaves behind his cherished bonus sisters, Judy Freeman (Joe), Becky Leclair (John), and Tammy Exel (Dave), along with nieces and nephews whom he loved as his own: Loretta Ray (Mark), Douglas Ray Jr., Susan Langlois (Joey), Erika Young, Victoria Langelier, Cory Prindall, Zach Leclair, Nicholas Hewison, Scott Harley, Lily Harley, Leanna Bustos, Angela Kirkpatrick, Jennifer Thomas Stuart, Matt Vaughan, Leona Freeman, Cathy Friel, and Tisha Vaughan.
Arthur valued his friendships deeply, especially his longtime best friend Peter Wiers, and his family. He leaves behind countless relatives and friends who will remember his humor and love for his two dogs Sophie and Buster. Sophie provided so much peace and love to him in his final days.
A celebration of life and burial will be held on June 27, 2026, at Elmwood Cemetery in Pownal, Maine. Burial will take place at noon, followed by a celebration of life at 325 Libby Road, Pownal, Maine.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Travis Mills Foundation at TravisMills.org in honor of Arthur's memory.
