Police Officer Stan Southall was a Field Training Officer (FTO) assigned to the Northeast Patrol Division of the Dallas Police Department (DPD) in 1981. FTOs are assigned rookie police officers upon their graduation from the Police Academy. 1981 is the year I hired on the DPD and Stan was my first FTO after graduation. Most FTOs' rookies are in their early to mid-20s. I must have been a real challenge for Stan, as I was 35 years old. Back then, 35 was the oldest a rookie officer could be upon hiring. Stan treated me so well. He taught me how to be a good police officer. That was easy for him as he was probably the best on the Department. After Stan passed me onto the next phase of training, and when I started working by myself in a squad car, I would answer calls in the area where Stan worked. Upon arriving to my call, I would, on more than several occasions, be asked by the caller, "Where is Officer Southall? I thought, and was hoping that, he would answer my call. That's how well known Stan was known by the citizens. They all loved him and were proud to call him "Their Officer." The world is lesser a place for his absence.
