Stanley Ervin Ray, 69, of Poplar Bluff, MO, passed away Thursday, March 05, 2026, at his home.
Stretch was born on September 23, 1956, to Bill and Lois (Howell) Ray in Lynwood, California.
Stretch graduated from Cape Central High School in 1975. He made the McDonald's All-American team his senior year and went on to receive a full ride basketball scholarship to Mizzou. He played basketball at Mizzou for three seasons. During his time playing for the Tigers, he received Rookie of the Year, All Tournament Team, and MVP of the Big 8 Tournament. Stretch transferred to Cal State Fullerton to finish his senior year. He was a 7th round draft pick for the Milwaukee Bucks before ultimately ending his basketball career due to injuries. Stretch received his bachelor’s in science and education from Arkansas University in May 1988. Throughout his life, Stretch spent much of his time coaching and mentoring young players. He was a big supporter and advocate of individuals with special needs. Stretch was known to be a jack of all trades. He was never unwilling to help someone else in need and will be remembered for his care and kindness towards others.
Stretch is survived by his son, Billy Ray; grandchildren, Graciella, Jax, and Jorden Ray; the Osborn Family, the Susan Loenneke Family, the Zschille Family, and the Holland Family.
Stretch was preceded in death by his parents, Bill and Lois Ray; sister, Diana (Jim) Osborn.
A gathering of family and friends will be held on Friday, March 13, 2026, from 12:00-1:00pm at Cotrell Willow Ridge Funeral & Cremation Services. Memorial service to follow beginning at 1:00pm with Pastor Matthew Osborn officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Missouri Special Olympics Donate | Special Olympics.
