Stanley W. Thompson, 90, passed away peacefully in
Ogden, Utah on Sunday, July 6, 2025, with his family at his bedside.
Stan was born in Bethesda, Maryland on October 9, 1934, to his parents, Merlin Axel and Zina Woodland Thompson. He grew up in Brigham City, Utah and graduated from Box Elder High School in 1952.
Stan was proud to serve in the United States Army, 82nd Airborne in the occupation forces post-World War II. He was stationed in Berchtesgaden, Germany where he met the love of his life, Emma Maria Strohmaier. They were married on October 30, 1958 in Salzburg, Austria, Emma's hometown. They shared 51 years of marriage and raised six children before her passing in 2010.
Stan began his work life as a newspaper boy for the Box Elder News and Journal and eventually became a typesetter in the print shop. After his military service, he worked for ABC Construction then became a self-employed cement contractor, carpenter, and finally a general contractor. For a time, he worked for Precision Built Homes in Ogden. He was a hard worker and built many homes and small businesses all along the Wasatch Front and beyond. He was proud of his craftsmanship and spent extra time ensuring a home was perfect before he declared it finished.
After he retired, he shunned his hammer and played as hard as he worked. He spent many happy hours fly fishing and camping with the grandchildren. He became an avid mountain biker and a rogue trail builder; designing, mapping, and building many local trails near Brigham City, Perry, and Willard. He loved all of the people he met on the trails and thoroughly enjoyed his new friends. He learned to ski in his 70s and had another group of skiing buddies that frequently hit the slopes together for many years. He wrung every ounce of enjoyment to be had out of his retirement. He lived a full life.
Stan was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Emma; his sister, Merlene Braegger Jones; and his grandson, Brady Pittman.
He is survived by his children; Diana Glenn Wuenschell (Tom), Susan Vanderpool, Nancy (Rick) Reeder, Tina Conlon (Tim Brown), Thomas C. Thompson, and James A. Thompson; his sister, Joyce (Joe) Reese; his brother Merlin (Suzanne) Thompson; several cousins and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren; and many friends who are considered family.
Many thanks to the Aegis team who cared so deeply for him.
Interment will be at the Brigham City Cemetery, 300 E. 300 S.
