Stefan "Steve" L. Van Camp
August 7, 2024
Stefan "Steve" L. Van Camp, 78, of Syracuse, peacefully passed away on Wednesday at Elderwood at Liverpool. He was born in England on April 23, 1946, to a British mother and a Canadian father. Steve came to the US as a toddler to live in Central New York with his father after his mother passed away. On October 1, 1966, he married Sally Barone whom he met at Slotnick Enterprises where they both worked. Steve proudly served in the US Army 9th Infantry Division from 1966-1968. He received a Purple Heart from injuries obtained during the Vietnam War. After his military service ended, he was employed by Carrier Corp. where he worked as a brazer until 2010 when he retired after 42 years. Survivors include his loving wife, Sally M. Barone Van Camp; his two sons, Andrew A. (Sonja) Van Camp and Gregory J. (Kimberly) Van Camp; his five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; his brother-in-law, John (Patti) Barone; his sister-in-law, Rosetta Barone; many cousins, especially Cousin Keith Clarke in England. Steve was predeceased by his parents George and Gillian (Sims) Van Camp. Steve loved to read magazines about the military, cars, or his favorite music groups. It was not unusual to find piles of these publications surrounding his recliner. He was an avid Star Wars and Beatles fan, but his proudest possession was a 1979 Silver Anniversary Trans Am that he had for over 40 years. He was also known for breeding betta tropical fish. Steve was a past member of the Board of Directors of local Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 103; past President of the Central New York Aquarium Society; and he had held many positions for the International Betta Congress. Steve enjoyed summers at the camp on North Sandy Pond and vacationing in Cape Cod. Family and friends may call Sunday from 1 pm to 3 pm at the Carter Funeral Home, 1604 Grant Blvd, Syracuse. Funeral Services will be Monday 10 am at the funeral home with burial to follow in Woodlawn Cemetery with military honors, Syracuse, N.Y. A special thank you to the caring staff at Elderwood at Liverpool. Contributions may be made in Steve's honor to a local animal shelter or a charity of your choice in lieu of flowers.
