Stella Huso Obituary
She was born on January 8, 1919 in Portland, North Dakota, the daughter of Torkel and Anna (Holmen) Torkelson.
She later met her husband, Ordin Huso, and they were married on December 20, 1939. They moved to Mayville, ND, where they lived from 1939 to 1942. The young couple moved often: to Fosston, MN, then Deer River, later Henning, then to Big Lake, where the majority of their children attended schools and graduated from high school. From Big Lake, MN, they moved to Hanover, MN where they built their own home – Stella even hammered some of the nails!
Stella celebrated her 105th birthday on January 8. She is the nation's oldest living Gold Star Mother on record. Stella's story is one of resilience, patriotism, and unwavering dedication to her family and country. She became a Gold Star Mother upon losing her son, Wayde, to an enemy artillery shell in Vietnam on August 13, 1969. After the tragic loss of her son, Stella became a relentless advocate for our nation's veterans and their families. She has offered solace and support to countless military families in their darkest moments.
Survived by her daughter, Diane Conti; eight grandchildren; sixteen great – grandchildren; 8 great-great-grandchildren; and other relatives and friends.
Preceded in death by sons, Wayde Huso and Steven Huso; daughters, RoseMarie (Huso) Kay and Trisha (Huso) Seifert; and her husband, Ordin in 1997.
Funeral services for Stella Huso will be held on Friday, August 30, 2024 at 12:00 PM at Bethany Bible Church in Big Lake, MN. Pastor Mark Snider will officiate. Interment will be at Big Lake Cemetery.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, August 29th from 5-8 PM at The Peterson Chapel in Buffalo, MN and at 11:00 AM on Friday at the church.
Honorary casket bearers will be Members of the Big Lake American Legion Post 147 Auxiliary.
