Stephanie "Steph" Scheirer, 73, of Solvay, passed away Tuesday, October 22nd at Francis House. Born in Watertown to George and Sally Smits, Steph graduated from West Genesee High School and went on to receive both her undergraduate and graduate degrees in education from SUNY Oswego. She was employed as an elementary school teacher for the West Genesee School District and Syracuse City School District, where she retired after more than 30 years of service.
She was an avid runner, gardener, and loved to read. She supported causes that protected nature and was passionate about protecting our planet. But Steph's number one pleasure in life was spending time with her family and her friends, including her dear friend Margaret Simpson. Steph's greatest joys were her grandchildren and she took such pride in watching them grow up. Her grandchildren called her "Mimi" and could be heard saying "Best Mimi ever!" over and over again throughout the years.
She was predeceased by sister Michaela Cardinal.
Steph is survived by two sons, J. Matthew (Angela) Scheirer of Camillus and Joshua Scheirer of Venice, FL ; two brothers, Patrick (Stephanie) Smits of Dallas, TX and Michael (Dori) Smits of Solvay; three sisters, Katrina Smits of Dallas, TX, Lisa (Dan) King of Liverpool and Jennifer (Joe) Gettino of Camillus; granddaughters Madison, Clare, and Hannah Scheirer, and step grandsons Gregory and Joshua Holmes; nephews Colin Smits, Vinny and Anthony Gettino and niece Sophie Gettino.
Private calling hours will be held at B.L. Bush & Sons Funeral Home, 10 Genesee St., Camillus.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Francis House, 108 Michaels Ave, Syracuse, NY 13208 or online at francishouseny.org
