Stephen Countee Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Johnson Funeral Home Inc. - Houston on Apr. 28, 2025.
It is with profound sadness that we, The Countee family announce the transition of our beloved Stephen Countee. We thank you in advance for your prayers.
Stephen Countee passed away peacefully, leaving behind a legacy of strength, kindness, and unforgettable memories. Stephen carried a quiet wisdom and humor that touched the hearts of all who knew him.
Born on May 27, 1957, Stephen was a lifelong resident of Houston, Texas. He was a man who valued family above all and shared an unshakable bond with his loved ones. Stephen had a unique way of making people feel seen and valued. His smile could brighten any room, and his calm, caring spirit made him a friend to many.
Stephen attended Peabody High School in Alexandria, Louisiana, and later attended Jack Yates High School in Houston, Texas.
What many may not know is that Stephen had a remarkable gift for diving. He fell in love with swimming pools at a young age and later became known as one of the greatest divers of his time. People would line up just to watch him leap from the high boards, turning flips and twisting through the air before entering the water with barely a splash. He not only performed but taught others, becoming a quiet legend in his own right.
Stephen was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Dorothy Countee and Roosevelt Countee Sr.; and grandparents, Rebecca Washington, Nick Washington, Jack Countee, and Alberta Countee.
He leaves to cherish his memory his loving siblings: Roosevelt Jr. (Lillian), Linda (Robert), and James (Ida), all of Houston, Texas. He also leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, extended relatives, and friends whose lives were brighter because they knew him.
