Stephen Michael "Mike" Darby, of Stockbridge, Georgia, passed away on May 1, 2025, at the age of 59. Born on June 8, 1965, in Atlanta, Georgia, Mike lived a life marked by dedication to his family, his faith, and his lifelong passion for automobiles.
Mike was the beloved husband of Tammy Darby and a devoted father to Joe Darby and his wife Melissa, and Patrick Darby and his wife Laura. He was a proud grandfather to Malachi, Josiah, Paisley, and Beau Darby. Though he experienced the heartbreaking loss of his granddaughter Hope Darby, his love for all his grandchildren remained a central joy in his life.
He was the cherished son of Diane Burge and stepson of Verna Darby. Mike was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Percy and Bessy Lou Young, his paternal grandparents, Redden Floyd and Bessie Stephens Darby, his father, Herman Darby and stepfather, James "Shag" Burge. He shared close bonds with his siblings Kim Millsaps and her husband Andy, Jimmy Burge, and Pat Jackson and her husband Ron.
Professionally, Mike dedicated over three decades-35 years-to working as an automotive technician. His deep knowledge and enthusiasm for cars eventually led him to transition into writing about automobiles during the last 10 to 12 years of his career. This shift allowed him to share his expertise with a broader audience while continuing to engage with the subject he loved.
A pivotal moment in Mike's life came on Easter Sunday morning in the spring of 2004 when he trusted Christ as his Savior. This spiritual commitment became a cornerstone of who he was and guided him through both joyful times and personal trials. Mike had a passion to see others come to Christ, especially, the incarcerated.
Mike's legacy is one of steadfast love for his family, and a passion that turned into purpose through both hands-on craftsmanship and written word. His memory will live on in those who knew him best and loved him most.
May Stephen Michael "Mike" Darby's memory bring comfort to all who were touched by his life. A Celebration of Life will be held on May 24, 2025, at 11am at Old Pathway Baptist Church.
