Stephen "Steve O" Edward, 61, of Bloomfield, passed away Friday, October 3, 2025. He was born September 13, 1964, in Harbor City, California. He was an active member and volunteer at the American Legion Bloomfield Post 288 and was an officer in the post. He also enjoyed traveling.
Steve was a proud U.S. Army veteran who served with honor as an 88M Motor Transport Operator, rising to the rank of E4 – Specialist. Over the course of his distinguished career, he was stationed in locations around the globe, including Camp Casey in South Korea and Bamberg, Germany, among others. His service included a pivotal role in the Gulf War as part of Operation Desert Storm in 1990, where he was responsible for transporting all classes of military supply during the initial phase of the conflict.
Military service runs deep in Steve's family. His brother, David Edward, served as a Captain (O3) in the Armor Corps; his nephew, Peter Edward, currently serves as a First Lieutenant (O2) in the Quartermaster Corps. His uncles also contributed significantly to the US Military's legacy-Brigadier General James Herbert (O7) in the Infantry Corps (Brigadier General James A. Herbert - Army Heritage Center Foundation), Master Sergeant George Herbert (E8), Corporal (E4) Edward Herbert serving in the Army Air Corps in WW II, (NCO) Earl Sprouse in the Infantry Corps serving in WW II, Private First Class (E3) Chester Herbert serving in the Infantry Corps in WW I, Private Sydney Edward, a part of the in Gordan Highlanders (British Royal Army), Guy Clark serving in WW II, Hughes Gemmill (US Army), Robert Clark, and Edward Praul (US Army) - just to name a few. The family's commitment to defending the nation stretches back generations, with direct relatives having served as far back as the Revolutionary War.
A proud uncle to eight nieces and nephews, Steve was a captivating storyteller, always eager to share tales from his global adventures and the life lessons they taught him. His encyclopedic knowledge of sports-spanning every professional and collegiate league, across all divisions and levels-was nothing short of legendary. Many considered him an unofficial sports historian, able to recall facts, stats, and moments with astonishing precision, and he never hesitated to dive into spirited conversations about the games he loved.
Steve's intellect was matched by his remarkable memory and deep appreciation for history, which he recounted with clarity and passion throughout his 61 years. He had a natural gift for connecting with people, forming lasting friendships wherever he went. Above all, Steve stood firmly for the values he believed in, speaking with conviction and living a life rooted in integrity, curiosity, and kindness.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Edmond and Jeanne Edward, and his sister-in-law, Paula Woods Edward.
Steve is lovingly survived by his brother, David Edward of La Grange, Kentucky; his aunts, Reverend Ruth Gnagy of Waverly, Ohio, and Panida Herbert of Louisville, Kentucky; and eight cherished nieces and nephews-Paul Edward of Los Angeles, California; Sylvia Jaskowski of Chicago, Illinois; Elizabeth Edward of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; Luke Edward of Denver, Colorado; Peter Edward of Cleveland, Ohio; and Ethan, Bethany, and Sarabeth Edward, all of La Grange, Kentucky. He is also remembered by his longtime companion, Tina Hutchins; a host of cousins; and his extended family at the American Legion Bloomfield Post 288.
Though he may be gone in body, Steve's spirit endures in each of us-in our devotion to family, our commitment to community, and our resolve to live each day to the fullest. His absence will be deeply felt, but his memory will be honored and treasured always.
A remembrance service will be held 12:00 pm (noon) Saturday October 11, 2025, at the Bloomfield American Legion Post 288; 243 Chaplin Road, Bloomfield, Ky 40008. A family memorial will be held in Waverly Ohio on Sunday October 12, 2025.
