Stephen Richard Gerbe, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully at his home in Clinton Township on December 26, 2025, at the age of 82. Born on March 12, 1943, in Detroit, Steve's life was marked by dedication, love, and unwavering support for his family and community.
Steve's journey began as the beloved son of William and Celine (Persyn) Gerbe. He grew up in a lively household with 13 siblings. He is survived by siblings Jerry (Toni), Lorraine (the late Dave) Moran, Bill (Colleen), Jim, Mary Young, Tim, Ann (Paul) Toth, and John (Cindy). Steve was preceded in death by his dear parents; his brothers George (the late Gerry), Dave, and Larry (Paula); and sisters Celine (the late Jim), and Therese.
In his youth, Steve met the love of his life, Janet (Winkelman), and they embarked on a nearly 65-year journey of marriage filled with love, laughter, and the blessing of children. Together, they raised a wonderful family, including their children Craig (Teri), Kathy (Chris) Konal, Donna (Larry) Baetens, and Carolyn Stocking.
Steve's legacy grew with the addition of his adored grandchildren, Kristyn (Kyle), Robin (Chad), Emily, Eric (Emmy), Joshua (Victoria), Sean (Kristen), Jacob, Alex, and Seth. His joy multiplied with 16 great-grandchildren.
A dedicated employee, Steve spent 45 years with General Motors Powertrain Warren, where he worked as a tool setter. His commitment to excellence was evident in his work, and his colleagues respected him for his reliability and expertise. After retiring from GM, Steve continued to serve his community by working for Meijer for 10 years.
Steve's passion for sports was undeniable. An avid Detroit and Michigan athlete and sports fan, he also contributed to the sports community as a referee for CYO and MHSAA. His love for the game led him to coach football for Harper Woods Notre Dame and basketball at St. Jude, where he mentored young athletes, instilling in them the values of teamwork and perseverance.
Above all, Steve was a true family man. His love for his family was the cornerstone of his life, and he was always there to support, encourage, and celebrate each member's achievements, whether a game, concert, play, or award ceremony. The words that best describe Steve are loving, devoted, and steadfast. His presence brought comfort and strength to those around him, and his absence will be deeply felt by all who knew him.
Steve's life was a testament to the power of love, the importance of family, and the impact one person can have on the lives of many.
