Stephen John Habersack, 75, of Cumberland, MD, passed away peacefully at Miletree Nursing Home in Spencer, West Virginia. Born on September 8, 1949, in Cresaptown, MD, Stephen was the son of the late Elmer Joseph Habersack and Susan Francis (McKenzie) Habersack.
Stephen graduated from Allegany High School in 1968 and went on to serve in the United States Air Force from 1968 to 1972. He was stationed at Hill Air Force Base and later deployed to Thailand, where he worked as a jet engine mechanic and maintained the base commander's private plane.
In 1973, Stephen married Suella Bessie Robison, and together they shared 51 wonderful years of marriage. They raised one son, Christopher Stephen Habersack, who was the joy of Stephen's life.
Stephen is survived by his wife, Suella; his son, Christopher; his brother, James Habersack and wife Vickie of Cumberland, MD; and his sisters, Patricia Manis and husband Willie, Barrelville, MD, and Susan Burkett of Omaha, Nebraska. He is fondly remembered by his many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and friends.
Stephen was preceded in death by his parents, his nephews Matthew Habersack and his great nephew, Nicholas Harris, his brother-in-law Alvin Burkett, and his nephew Harvey "Rocky" Rockwell.
A devout Roman Catholic, Stephen lived his faith with deep devotion. He had a great love for the outdoors, spending countless hours hunting, fishing, and tying fly-fishing lures. Stephen was also an avid bowler, spending three nights a week at The Bowler in LaVale, where he was particularly proud of his 734 set in the church league. A lover of nature, he enjoyed feeding the birds black oil sunflower seeds daily. Stephen had a special place in his heart for his animals, including his childhood puppy, Wiggles and his beloved dogs, Dewbee and Scrappy.
As per Stephen's wishes, he will be cremated.
A committal service will be held at the Maryland Veteran's Cemetery at Rocky Gap on Friday, October 25, 2024 at 11:00 A.M.
Military honors will be accorded at the cemetery by the Post #13 Veterans Honor Guard.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to be made to the funeral home to offset the expenses.
Stephen will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him, and his memory will forever remain in the hearts of his family and friends.
The Adams Family Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur Street, Cumberland, MD, (www.AdamsFamilyFuneralHome.com) is assisting the family.
