Stephen Kolb Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Newbaker Funeral Home - Blairstown on Feb. 11, 2026.
Stephen Thomas Kolb, born in Brooklyn and raised in Levittown, New York, passed away peacefully at home on February 10, 2026, surrounded by the warmth of his loving family. He leaves behind a profound legacy defined by dedicated service, a passion for music, and an unwavering love for his family.

At the age of 20, Stephen joined the United States Air Force, serving with distinction during the Vietnam War while stationed in Thailand. Following his military service, he transitioned into a career as a federal firefighter. He spent the majority of his professional life at Picatinny Arsenal, where he found great fulfillment working alongside many who would become his lifelong friends.

In 1978, Stephen and his beloved wife of 54 years, Patricia, moved to Blairstown to plant roots and raise their family. It was here that Stephen truly became the cornerstone of a vibrant, growing household. He was the definition of a loving and giving father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. Known for his quick wit and a ready supply of jokes, Stephen had a unique ability to lighten any room. Yet, it was the warmth of his "best hugs"-always filled with genuine, palpable love-that his family will carry with them most.

Music was the heartbeat of Stephen's home. A talented musician, he was rarely without his guitar, and his voice was the soundtrack to countless family milestones. Friends and family cherished the moments they spent gathered around to hear him play and sing, creating an atmosphere of joy and togetherness that was uniquely his own. To his grandchildren, Stephen was known simply as "the GOAT" (Greatest of All Time). It was a title he wore with a quiet smile, and one that remains undisputed by every life he touched.

Steve enjoyed traveling the world, mostly because Pat said so. Visiting many places and countries across six different continents. He had a passion for history and enjoyed visiting historical sites all over the world. He especially enjoyed cruises, exploring the ships in search of a good trivia or karaoke event.

Stephen's legacy lives on through his large and devoted family. He is survived by his wife, Patricia Kolb, and his children: Kristin Shipps (late husband Tom); Stephen Kolb Jr. (wife Jennifer); Jamie Shaffer (husband Kevin); and Patrick Kolb (wife Geri).

He was the proud "GOAT" to thirteen grandchildren: Kevin Shaffer (wife Brielle), Stephen Kolb III, Karissa Shaffer, Craig Shipps, Kori Shaffer, Logan Shipps, Brock Kolb, Ryan Kolb, Katie Kolb, Mason Kolb, Kolby Shaffer, Riley Kolb, and Cash Kolb.

He is also survived by three great-grandchildren: Kashton Polowy, Klayton Shaffer, and Keegan Shaffer.

He leaves behind his sisters, Florence Schafer, Diane Adams, and his brother, Robert Kolb.

Stephen was preceded in death by his parents, Dorothy and Stephen Kolb, and his sister, Dorothy Kolb.

Stephen will be remembered as a man of service, a source of endless music, and a pillar of strength for his family. His life was a testament to the fact that the greatest legacy one can leave is a home filled with laughter and a family that knows they were deeply loved.

Services will be held Sunday, February 15, 2026, at Newbaker Funeral Home from 1:00 PM – 4:00 PM.

Family asks that donations be made to Blairstown Hose Company #1. P.O. Box J, Blairstown, NJ 07825
