Stephen M. Lenz, 59, of Lacon, Illinois, died on January 29, 2024, at his home in Sparland. Born October 1, 1964, in Peoria to Louis and Marjorie (Smith) Lenz, Steve graduated from Mid-County High School in 1983. He attended Illinois College for one year before enlisting in the Illinois National Guard. Serving as a weekender and civil servant, he attained the rank of Staff Sergeant before retiring after 20 years.
Steve is survived by his father Lou Lenz of Sparland; brother Andrew (Lynn) Lenz of Colona; sister (with the nice hair) Laura (Tom) Eboli of Downers Grove; nieces Andrea, Katie, Elizabeth and Lauren; and nephew Andrew. Steve was the sarcastic nephew of Favorite Uncle Certainly Kind and best cousin to Booge. He was preceded in death by his mother Marjorie and his beloved dog Skye.
Steve was an avid historian and man about town – sharing his love and knowledge of all things Lacon and Marshall County. He thrived in his bartender role at River Rats Saloon in Lacon, sharing amazing stories with his dear friend Jen and others, while entering into deep discussions with Jerry the Gourmand. Steve’s golf cart cemetery tours were legendary. His thirst for crossword puzzles unquenchable.
Steve was a regular contributor to Memories of Lacon on Facebook, sharing archives of information including a prized video he created of the Lacon tornado. He also preserved local history by mapping numerous cemeteries on Find a Grave including Lacon, Immaculate Conception Catholic, Old Salem, and Cumberland. Steve’s jobs were various including Midwest Foundation, Midwest Gun Club, driver for Continental Casket, asbestos removal and more. Steve leaves behind many friends and looks forward to reuniting with best pals Jordy, Troy and Skye.
