Stephen G. McDermott, Jr., 71, of South Kingstown, RI, passed away on January 28, 2026, at his home, with his loving wife by his side. He was the devoted husband, best friend, and soul mate of Lisa (Sherman) Babcock. Born in Providence, RI, he was a son of Stephen G. and Audrey (Babcock) McDermott, Sr.
Stephen attended Northeastern University and the University of Rhode Island and worked in the commercial fishing industry and for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). He then went on to complete a 32-year career with the United States Postal Service. Steve enjoyed camping, hiking, boating, music, and animals, but his real passion lay in woodworking. His meticulous nature and extensive knowledge of wood allowed him to create many beautiful pieces of furniture and gifts for family and friends that will be treasured forever. Whether it was building a dory, a garden bench, or a bluebird house, he spent many hours on projects designing and perfecting his wonderful creations.
As his many friends can attest, he was a kind, caring and gentle soul who was always available to lend a hand and help anyone in need. His sense of humor and personality made him a fun guy to be around, allowing him to make friends easily, whom he cherished.
Besides his wife he is survived by a daughter, Meghan Robles (Anyelo) of Ashaway, RI, and a son, Evan McDermott (Emily) of Wakefield, RI; two grandchildren, Charlize and Rafael Robles; a sister, Deborah (McDermott) Brayton of Warwick, RI, and a brother, Gregory McDermott (Patricia) of Warwick, RI.; and nieces and nephews, Sean Brayton, Lexi Brayton, Tracey McDermott and Adam McDermott. He was the stepfather of the late Matthew and Samuel Babcock.
The family would like to thank Dr. Matthew Austin and his team at Smilow for their wonderful care and treatment of Steve, with special thanks to Megan (RN), who was our angel. We would also like to thank Dr. Angela Taber, whose diligence and hard work gave us the precious gift of three years.
In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory can be made to Hope Health Hospice, 143 Main St., Wakefield, RI, 02879.
Visiting hours will be held on Wednesday, February 4, 2026, from 4PM to 6PM at Avery Storti Funeral Home, 88 Columbia St. Wakefield. A funeral service will be held on Thursday February 5, 2026, at 11AM in Avery Storti Funeral Home.
A Celebration of Steve's Life will be held at a later date.
