Caldwell Parrish Funeral Home & Crematory - Urbandale ChapelStephen Dean Nims, 70, of Urbandale, IA, passed away peacefully at his residence on November 20, 2025. Visitation will be held from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM on Tuesday, December 2, 2025, at Caldwell Parrish Funeral Home & Crematory in Urbandale. A memorial service will follow at 12:00 PM, with inurnment to take place at Glendale Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to EveryStep Hospice or the National Scleroderma Foundation.
Stephen was born on September 1, 1955 to Dean and Lea Marcia (Carlson) Nims in Ames, IA. He pursued his education at Des Moines Technical High School, graduating in 1974, and later attended Des Moines Area Community College, where he completed his studies in 1983. Stephen dedicated a significant part of his life to his career, working at Paper Corporation until his retirement in 2021.
On October 17, 1981, he married Christine Kruzich in Madrid, Iowa. Together, they built a life filled with love and cherished memories. Stephen was a proud father to his daughter, Jessica Bennett. He found immense joy in being a grandfather to his four grandsons: Cade, Lenny, Corbin, and Carter Bennett.
An avid sports fan, Stephen was not only passionate about watching games but also actively participated in his hobbies. He had a special interest in model railroads and was an active member of the Raccoon Valley Model Railroad Club. Golf was another passion; he enjoyed spending time at the Urbandale Golf & Country Club. Stephen's competitive spirit shone through in his accomplishments as he earned numerous state and regional titles in racquetball.
He is survived by his wife, Christine Nims of Urbandale, Iowa; his daughter, Jessica (Aaron) Bennett of Waukee, Iowa; and his four grandsons: Cade, Lenny, Corbin, and Carter Bennett. Additionally, he leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews who loved him dearly.
Stephen was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers: Dwayne, Gregory, and David Nims.
His warmth, enthusiasm for life, and dedication to family will be missed by all who knew him.
