Stephen Charles Palinkas

April 21, 1955-January 30, 2026

Steve was born in Bridgeport and relocated to Harwinton in early childhood. He worked for many dealerships as a mechanic in his early career and joined Local 478 in the 1980's. Working his way up the ladder for companies from Bay Crane to A&A Crane and Rigging, he became one of the top Crane Operators in the State of Connecticut.

Steve is survived by his brother, John Michael Palinkas of Harwinton. He was predeceased by his parents, Stephen John Palinkas and Mary Elizabeth Kissh. He married Jane (Kutz) Palinkas and was father to Victoria and Benjamin. Benjamin married Brittany Hurlbutt and has two children, Hadley and Kasey.

Steve was a person of diverse interests. For many years, he belonged to both the Pleasant Valley and the Winsted Volunteer Fire Departments. He loved snowmobiling and was a member of the Knox Trail Snow Riders and was serving as Vice President at the time of his passing. He also became involved in garden tractor pulling, and was regularly seen announcing at competitions.

Steve raised Alaskan Malamutes and competed in weight pulling with them, including the wonderful Baloo, Nanuk, and Mork-the loyal friend he left behind. A many years member of the Northwestern CT Dog Club, he also participated in writing the initial rules for weight pulling for the United Kennel Club.

After retirement, Steve collected Lionel trains and die cast toys, many of them altered to replicate ones owned by friends. His last trip was to Cass, West Virgina to ride and drive a real Shay steam Locomotive, a long-time dream.

Jane, his wife of 46 years, was by his side as he passed. Per Steve's wishes, there will be no services. Donations in his name may be made to The American Cancer Society. Visit an online guestbook at montano-shea.com.
