Stephen Peyton, 69, of Canton, passed away at 1:18 pm Friday, January 31, 2025, at Blessing Hospital in
Quincy, IL.
Stephen was born July 24, 1955, in Huntington, WV to Belmont Ray and Nellie (Vickers) Peyton.
Survivors include his mother, Nellie Bailey; his five children, Virginia Peyton of Canton, Stacey Peyton of Canton, Jeremy Peyton (Katie) of Quincy, Jason Peyton (December) of Mendon, and Stephenie Hickman (Chad) of Ursa; sixteen grandchildren, Rilee, Caden, Addison, Amelia, Alexander, Asher, Dagyn, Zayden, Aiden, Jason Jr., Bella, Kaija, Gracelynn, Lyberty, Maycelynn, and Harley; two sisters, Connie Tolbert of Huntington, WV and Kathy Nelson (Butch) of Ona, WV; two nieces, Makala Adkins and Tracy Harding; two great-nephews, Benny Adkins and Ezan Harding; aunt and uncle, Thelma and Burti Butcher; and best friend, Paul Edmondson.
Stephen was preceded in death by his father; his stepfather, Boyd Bailey; one brother in-law, Butch Tolbert; and his grandparents, Frank and Goldie Vickers, and William and Virginia Sarten.
After completing his education, he answered the call of duty and proudly served in the United States Navy. His time in the service instilled in him a sense of discipline and honor that he carried throughout his life. Following his military service, he began working at Discount Battery as a starter repairman, later opening his own business, BG Starter & Alternator, in Bowling Green. His career path also led him to the railroad EZ Electric and eventually back to Rex's Battery as a mechanic, where he remained until his retirement in 2023.
Stephen was an avid fisherman, reveling in the tranquility of nature and the thrill of the catch. Hunting was another of his pursuits, allowing him to connect with the great outdoors. A voracious reader, Stephen found solace and adventure within the pages of western and science fiction novels. His culinary skills were a source of joy for his family, especially during holiday gatherings and cookouts.
Above all, Stephen was a family man through and through. His happiest moments were spent with his grandchildren, whose achievements and adventures brought him immense pride and joy. He also treasured his visits to Huntington, WV, where he reconnected with his roots and shared precious time with his mother and sisters. His presence was a source of comfort and happiness, and his absence will be deeply felt by all.
A Graveside Service will be at 10:00 am Tuesday, February 4, 2025, at the Sunset Cemetery in Quincy. Pastor Shane Tomko will officiate. Full military honors will be provided by the American Legion Post #37 and the United States Navy Funeral Honors Detail.
