Stephen J. Putnam

1947 - 2025

Stephen J. Putnam, 78 of Pittsfield, passed away December 15, 2025 at home. Born in Pittsfield on September 28, 1947, he was the son of the late Franklin and Marjorie Studley Putnam.

He was a 1966 graduate of Pittsfield High School and received his associates degree from Berkshire Community College. Mr. Putnam was a United States Army Veteran, having served during Vietnam.

He married the former Renee Wells on April 30, 1983 at Grace Episcopal Church in Dalton.

Stephen worked as an insurance agent for many years at Boston Mutual. He also did lawncare for Joe Hougue, installed carpets with Tony Garzone and worked for the Pittsfield Water Department and was manager at the Houston Post.

He enjoyed growing giant pumpkins and loved ferrets and dinosaurs. He was a history buff, and was a master chess player and loved listening to Fleetwood Mac. Stephen took pleasure in being outside, hiking, bicycling and snorkeling.

Mr. Putnam is survived by his beloved wife of 42 years, Renee Putnam of Pittsfield. Children, Felicia Wells of IN, and Sybil Smith of Torrance, CA. His brothers, Franklin Putnam of GA and David Putnam of Holyoke. Eight grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his son, Randy Chatterton.

FUNERAL NOTICE: Calling hours will be held, Monday, December 22, 2025 from 1 to 3 p.m. at Dery Funeral Home, 54 Bradford St, Pittsfield. A funeral home service will follow at 3 p.m. celebrated by Rev. Joni Carron. Burial will be held in the Spring. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in his name to the Berkshire Humane Society in care of the funeral home.
