Stephen E. Shapiro passed away on January 6, 2026, at the age of 81.

Born on August 4, 1944, in New Jersey, Stephen later moved to Tennessee, where he spent the final years of his life living with his daughter and her family.

Stephen proudly served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War, a period that profoundly shaped his identity and remained central to who he was throughout his life. He was an infantryman assigned to the 101st Airborne Division (Screaming Eagles), one of the Army’s most distinguished combat units. During his service in Vietnam, Stephen also served as a helicopter door gunner, a role that placed him directly in combat and required exceptional courage, vigilance, and resilience.

He completed his military service at the rank of Specialist Fourth Class (SP4) and was honorably discharged. His service was recognized with numerous awards and decorations, including the Bronze Star Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, National Defense Service Medal, and the Good Conduct Medal, reflecting both his combat service and dedication to duty. Military service was not simply a chapter of Stephen’s life — it was a defining part of who he was. He carried deep pride in his time in uniform, remained strongly military-focused throughout his life, and identified closely with the values of service, loyalty, and sacrifice.

Stephen is survived by his daughter, Susan Shapiro-Briggs; his son-in-law, Michael Briggs; and his grandchildren, Desiree’ Briggs and Spencer Briggs, who were an important part of his life.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Melvin and Beatrice Shapiro, and his brother, Charles Shapiro.

Stephen and Susan shared a deeply personal and complex bond — one defined by honesty, loyalty, humor, and love. In his later years, Stephen lived with Susan and her family, allowing them to spend the last decade together — time that included both challenges and meaningful moments.

Stephen was strong-willed, independent, and unmistakably himself. He had a unique sense of humor, enjoyed simple comforts, and valued familiar routines. He will be remembered for his individuality, his service to his country, and the lasting impression he left on those who knew him.

Military honors will be provided in recognition of his service. Funeral arrangements are private.
