Stephen Smelley Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Naville & Seabrook Funeral Home - Market Street Chapel on Sep. 9, 2025.
Stephen James Smelley, 43, of New Albany, IN, passed away on Tuesday, September 9, 2025. He was born in Huntingburg, IN, to James and J. Denise (Goodlin) Smelley.

Stephen is preceded in death by his father, James Smelley. He is survived by his mother, Denise Smelley; brothers, Russell (Melisa) and Mark; his niece and nephew, Layla and Boss Smelley. Also survived by a loving pet, Lacey.

Stephen was an avid fan of all thing's "nerd", from video games to comic books to 80's cartoons and beyond. Anything off beat and creative. He overcame his fear of dogs to become one of their best friends. He had a generous spirit, doing whatever he could to let those people who were charged with his care know that they were appreciated.

All services will be held at Trinity United Methodist Church, 2796 Charlestown Rd, New Albany, Indiana, 47150. Visitation will be from 10:00 am to 11:00 am, with the funeral service beginning at 11:00 am. Burial is to follow at Fairview Cemetery in New Albany, Indiana.

Stephen was part of a study into chronic pancreatitis at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. This study was an important help in his treatment. If you wish, we would be honored if you would like to remember Stephen through their continuing research at UPMC Children's Hospital Foundation.

My heart is filled with sadness at the passing of Stephen and his family is in my prayers in this time of sorrow. My mother Dorothy Jean Walker Jenkins was Stephen's father's Jimmy's first cousin and growing up Jimmy was always in my life as a mentor and wonderful presence. I didn't have the privilege of knowing Stephen and his brothers like his father new myself nd my brother Bill. My brother Billy ( who also passed away on September 9th in 2009) was more connected to Stephen, Mark and Russell then I was and I was always envious of him for that connection he kept with them. Billy always talked about how awesome all of them were. Even though I wasn't around Stephen and his brothers like Billy was I was always kept up on what was going on by my brother. Billy also loved all of you with all his heart. As I have too. I will remember Stephen as a kind and happy soul . And I feel blessed that I have been and always will b a part of this wonderful family. I will miss him but I will not forget him.
