Stephen Smith Obituary

Stephen D. Smith, 69, passed from this life on Wednesday, January 14, 2026, at his home in Columbus, surrounded by his loving family. He was born June 5, 1956, in Columbus, Indiana, to Marion D. Smith and Oneita E. Smith.

Affectionately known as Wolf, Stephen was a lifelong resident of Columbus. He graduated from Columbus East High School in 1974 and began a long and dedicated career at Cummins shortly thereafter. With over 39 years of service, including 22 years in the print shop, Stephen was known for his strong work ethic, commitment, and pride in his work.

Stephen is survived by his wife of 49 years, Karen Smith; his children, Chandra Haislup, Holly (Ryan) Newland, and Jordan Smith; and his cherished granddaughters, Peyton Haislup, Jada (Xavier) White, and Bella Newland, who lovingly knew him as "Poppy."

He was preceded in death by his parents and his siblings, Judith Smith, Mikki Bilton (Smith), David Smith, and Gary Smith.

Stephen's faith was central to his life. Baptized as one of Jehovah's Witnesses on August 29, 1968, he devoted himself to sharing Bible truths with sincerity and compassion to all he met. His spirituality and his Bible-based hope for a better future guided his daily actions and relationships.

A talented bass player, Stephen found joy and fellowship through music, performing with his band. His natural rhythm and melody were an extension of his harmonious approach to life. His genuine smile, infectious laughter, kindness, humility, quiet encouragement, and unwavering faith left a lasting impression on all who knew him.

Stephen is fondly remembered for remaining true to himself in every situation, a quality that made him truly special. Though he will be deeply missed, the love and faith he shared continue to live on in others.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, January 31, 2026, at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, 545 N. National Road, Columbus, officiated by Terry Lewis. Visitation will be held from 1:00 p.m. until the time of service.

In accordance with Stephen's wishes, cremation will take place.

Arrangements are entrusted to Barkes, Weaver & Glick Funeral Home.
