Stephen Smith Obituary

Published by Legacy on Feb. 20, 2026.
Stephen Darrell Smith, 61, passed away February 14, 2026, in Arizona. He was born April 18, 1964, in Belleville, Illinois, to Darrell Eugene Smith and Paula Nancy Smith (née Hanks).

In the seventh grade, Stephen moved with his family to Arizona, where he would build his life and legacy. He graduated from Arizona State University with a degree in English literature before earning his Juris Doctor. He went on to practice law with dedication and integrity, working with respected firms, assisting in the family construction business, and ultimately establishing his own practice, Stephen D. Smith LLC.

He is survived by his mother, Paula Smith; his daughter, Megan; his sons, Ethan and Andrew; his sister, Laura Sells; and his brother, Daniel Smith. He was preceded in death by his father, Darrell Eugene Smith.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Stephen was a man of many talents and deep faith. A lifelong musician, his first and favorite instrument was the bass guitar, though he also taught himself guitar, drums, and keyboard. Music was one of his greatest joys.

An avid reader and gifted writer, Stephen majored in English literature and later authored a book recounting the adventurous stories of his youth when his family owned an amethyst mine. He had a love of camping and exploring new places, and an unforgettable sense of humor. He was known for giving the very best nicknames to those he loved.

Above all else, Stephen loved the Lord. His faith anchored his life and quietly strengthened many, including his children. He often encouraged others through their doubts by the steadiness of his own belief.

Stephen was a devoted father. He faithfully coached his sons' Little League baseball teams from elementary school through high school and treasured time spent adventuring with his family.

A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday at Green Acres Cemetery in Scottsdale, Arizona.

Stephen's legacy lives on in the music he created, the law he practiced, the faith he shared, and the love he gave so freely to his family.
