Stephenson "Steve" Conley Miller, 85, of Albany, GA, passed away peacefully at his home on February 16, 2026.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, March 14, 2026, at Porterfield Memorial Methodist Church, with Rev. Chuck Knight officiating.

The family will receive friends in the church parlor from 1:00 PM until 2:00 PM.

Following the service, at 3:30 PM, family and friends are invited to gather at The Bread House & Granary (520 North Jefferson Street) for refreshments and a relaxed time together to share stories, laughs, and remember Steve.

Born September 7, 1940 in Nashville, TN to Marvin Leroy Miller and Lucile Morgan Miller, Steve attended Woodmont Grammar School before continuing his education at Montgomery Bell Academy. He went on to study at Vanderbilt University, where he majored in biology simply because he loved the subject, adding a minor in business.

After graduating, as the nation entered a period of military draft, he chose to serve by joining the Air National Guard. His path soon shifted toward federal service, influenced in part by his father’s work at the Federal Reserve Bank and a connection within the U.S. Secret Service. In March of 1965, he entered the Secret Service, beginning in the Nashville office.

His career quickly expanded into presidential protection. In 1966, he was transferred to Austin, Texas, where he served on the protective detail for President Lyndon B. Johnson’s daughter. He later moved to the White House, serving there for the next five years.

In 1973, as the Nixon administration neared its end, Steve transferred to the Atlanta Field Office as a Special Agent and later helped establish the new Secret Service office in Albany, Georgia. His final assignment was as Special Agent in Charge of former President Jimmy Carter’s protective detail in the Plains Office, a role he held until his retirement in 1987. His career spanned 25 years of honorable, dedicated service to the nation.

His personal life was as rich as his professional one. In 1969, during a vacation back to his hometown of Nashville, TN, he met the love of his life, Lucy Hoffman, on a blind date. The two were married in Nashville on October 20, 1973, beginning a partnership defined by devotion, humor, and deep mutual respect. In 1977, his career brought them to Albany, Georgia, where they built their family and community.

Mr. Miller was a member of Porterfield Memorial United Methodist Church and the Seekers Sunday School Class. He cherished simple pleasures: fishing on a quiet Spring day, listening to oldies music, and watching college football, especially his beloved Vanderbilt Commodores.

He is survived by his daughter Stephanie Kosloske (Kurt); his son Morgan Miller (Lesslie); and his granddaughter Madeline Miller, who brought him immeasurable joy and pride.

He will be remembered for his humility, his unwavering integrity, and the warmth he brought to every room. His legacy lives on in the family he cherished and the countless lives he touched.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that donations be made in Steve's memory to the USO https://www.USO.org/, or to Porterfield Memorial United Methodist Church, 2200 Dawson Road, Albany, GA 31707.
