Steve George, 93, of Bedford, formerly of Pittsburgh, passed away peacefully on December 24, 2025, at his home in Meadowbrook Terrace, a neighborhood of Bedford. He was born on March 31, 1932 in Pittsburgh, a son of the late Eleftherios P. and Anna (Marouli) George. On August 19, 1962 in Pittsburgh, he married Lynn (Reid) George and she survives after 63 years of marriage along with their son: Gregory and wife, Katherine; two grandsons: Owen and Dylan; and extended family. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, architect, and community advocate, Steve dedicated his life to thoughtful design and public service.

Steve’s family, friends, and colleagues will remember him for his tenacious spirit, positive outlook, and vision for projects and initiatives to benefit the public realm. A graduate of Carnegie Mellon University (1958) with further study in Urban Design and City Planning (1960), Steve served the City of Pittsburgh as Director of Lands & Buildings and Parks & Recreation before becoming Executive Director of the Urban Redevelopment Authority in 1973. He later led Allegheny County’s Department of Aviation, overseeing the Midfield Terminal Complex at Greater Pittsburgh International Airport from 1984-1987. When not serving as a public official, Steve worked in private practice as an architect at several notable Pittsburgh architectural firms throughout his long career, including Ritchey & Sipple, IKM-SGE, and Bohlin Cywinski Jackson. He became inducted into the American Institute of Architects College of Fellows, the profession’s highest honor, in 1988.

Upon retiring in Bedford, Steve and his wife Lynn lovingly restored and operated The Chancellor’s House Bed & Breakfast (2001–2021), located in the Bedford historic district. He helped catalyze the revitalization of the historic Bedford Springs Hotel (now Omni Bedford Springs), guided the transformation of the John Anderson House into SAMA–Bedford, and served his community as a member of Borough Council, Planning and Tree Commissions, as chair of the Historic Architectural Review Board, the Bedford County Airport Authority, and Downtown Bedford, Inc. He also advanced the urban design vision for Bedford’s River Park East along the Juniata River. He founded the Bedford Heritage Trust for the preservation and development of the Fort Bedford Museum.

A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, January 6, 2026 at 11 a.m. in the Chapel at the Timothy A. Berkebile Funeral Home in Bedford with Pastor Patrick Murphy officiating. Friends will be received on Monday, January 5, 2026 from 5 – 7 p.m. at the funeral home and on Tuesday one hour prior to the service. A second memorial service will be scheduled in Pittsburgh and announced at a later date at Church of the Ascension.
