It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Steve M. Gonzales on May 24, 2025. He was 59 years old.
Steve was born to Santiago Jr. and Florence Gonzales on December 31, 1965, the youngest of eight children.
He was preceded in death by his wife Mandy (06/2022); mother, Florence (03/2022); and sister, Roberta Ann (05/1959).
He is survived by his sons, Kevin and Joaquin Gonzales, both of Pojoaque; father Santiago Gonzales, Jr. of Nambe; siblings, Donna (Clint) Bowyer of White Rock, Monica (John) Garcia of Santa Fe, Dennis Gonzales (Maxine) of Espanola, Carol (Curt) Kuper of Albuquerque, Katrina (Ward) Rupprecht of White Rock and Kenneth (Jennifer) Gonzales of Las Cruces; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and other extended family members.
Brought up in Nambe, NM, Steve possessed a variety of rich talents – including artistic, athletic, gardening, and culinary. He worked and played alongside his dad and brothers to form tight bonds with each. He was baptized, confirmed, attended Catechism and later served as an altar boy in the Pojoaque parish, and his faith grew throughout his life. He attended Pojoaque schools where he lettered in three varsity sports (cross country, track, and basketball). His school spirit mural is still displayed in the foyer of the Frank B. Lopez Gym, where he played guard for the “Running Elks”. Steve attended UNM before working for the Protective Force at Los Alamos (LANL), and then finding his professional calling as a successful general contractor. He shared his abundant love and exceptional skills for fishing, hunting, and the Northern New Mexico outdoors with his sons. He was a very proud “Norteno”. Kevin states that everything he and Joaquin learned, they learned from their dad.
Steve left us with many fond, humorous, and cherished memories and lifelong lessons. Steve is deeply loved and missed by his two sons, family, and friends - yet we are consoled that he departed from us and into the loving and everlasting light of our Heavenly Father.
Rosary and Mass are scheduled for 9:00 a.m. and 10 a.m. respectively, at Sacred Heart Church in Nambe, NM, on Thursday, June 26, 2025. Burial will follow at Rosario Cemetery, Santa Fe, NM.
We have entrusted Steve’s care to the DeVargas Funeral Home in Espanola to whom we owe our heartfelt gratitude. We also are grateful for Presbyterian Hospital and their incredible hospice staff, and to Charlene and Stacey Gonzales.
The family of Steve Gonzales has entrusted the care of their loved one to DeVargas Funeral Home & Crematory of the beautiful Espanola Valley. 505-747-7477
