Steve “Muggsy” Murray, age 72, beloved husband, brother, uncle and friend, died unexpectedly on Thursday, December 11, 2025 at his home in Yankton and went to be with his Lord and Savior.
A celebration of his life will be held at 7:00 PM, on Sunday, December 14, 2025 at the Wintz & Ray Funeral Home in Yankton with Reverend Jeff Otterman officiating. Visitation is from 5:00 to 7:00 PM, on Sunday, at the Wintz & Ray Funeral Home.
Steve was born March 26, 1953 in Quincy, Massachusetts to Robert and Marian (Hoar) Murray. He graduated from North Quincy High School and then off to college, graduating from the University of New Hampshire. Steve loved playing football in both high school and college. He was voted captain of his high school football team by his teammates which was something he was very proud of. Steve then became a roadie for the James Cotton Blues Band, traveling all over the country. In 1979, he moved to Yankton and met the love of his life, Debra Grosshuesch. They were married on October 12, 1979 and spent 47 years together. Steve helped with the construction of Alumax in Yankton and then worked in sales into his late 50’s when he retired.
In retirement, Steve was an excellent parts man for the Rockne’s. He always loved watching sports and the news and enjoyed fishing and golfing when he was younger. Steve was loved by many. One of his greatest joys in life was making people laugh and he was really good at it. His sense of humor was unmatched. He loved life and was so grateful and blessed.
Steve is survived by his wife, Deb Murray of Yankton; brother, John (Pam) Murray of Yankton; his in-laws: Pam Heath, Kevin Grosshuesch, Kim (John) Cordie, Julie Grosshuesch, and Ginny Murray; many nieces and nephews; and his special dear family, Tom and Leann Rockne and their children.
Steve was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Robert Murray; two sisters, Paula (Bob) Johnston and Jane Murray; brother-in-law, Scott Grosshuesch; and sister-in-law, Elaine Grosshuesch.
Stevie’s faith was solid as a rock. He was a gift and true treasure. Sleep in Heavenly peace my dear Stevie. I love you! You were truly something else.
