Stephen Wayne Tipton, age 73, of Indianapolis, passed away unexpectedly at home on Tuesday, July 8, 2025. He was born in Indianapolis on September 5, 1951, to Fred Tipton and Bettie (McKamey) LeClaire.
Stephen graduated from Indiana Wesleyan University with a Bachelor of Science and earned his Master of Public Administration from the School of Public and Environmental Affairs at Indiana University. He married Carolyn (Johnson) Tipton in 1983.
Stephen served in the United States Air Force and later dedicated 16 years to civil service with Defense Finance and Accounting Service (DFAS) before retiring.
He was passionate about riding his motorcycle and was actively involved in the Masonic Lodge, the Shrine, and the Scottish Rite. In recent years, he had taken up learning the bagpipes. He enjoyed traveling and spent his winters on the Gulf Coast.
Stephen is survived by his wife, Carolyn Tipton; his daughters Anne and Elaine, and Kristi and Jenny; his grandchildren Tyler, Michael, and Callie, Brittany and Alex, and Harleigh and Johnny; his sister, Kathy Potter; and his brother, Ken Tipton. He is preceded in death by his parents as well as his stepmother Helen Tipton.
Visitation will be held on Friday, July 18, 2025, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., with a funeral service beginning at 1:00 p.m. Burial will follow at 2:30 p.m. at Oaklwawn Memorial Gardens. Services will be held at Indiana Funeral Care, 8151 Allisonville Rd., Indianapolis, IN 46250.
