James Stephen Wise (Steve), 77 of Prosperity, SC passed away peacefully at White Oak of Newberry on Thursday, March 6th surrounded by family.

Born on September 17th, 1947 in Prosperity, SC, he was the son of the late Homer Luther and Novice Enlow Wise. Steve graduated from both Mid-Carolina High School and Newberry College. He served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. He worked for the Newberry County Unemployment Office for several years. He eventually left his office life to manage his family business, Wise's Service Station selling gas, snacks, and those famous Wise's Boiled Peanuts. Steve was a well known Striper Fishing Guide on Lake Murray for over 25 years. He was well liked and respected by his fellow fishing guides and entertained clients from around SC as well as several that traveled from out of state to fish with him. Through the years, Steve also enjoyed playing Setback and hunting with family and friends. Deer hunting was his favorite. Unfortunately, that big one over by the powerline always outsmarted him. During baseball season, there was no doubt you could find Steve in his chair watching the Atlanta Braves. More than fishing, hunting, baseball, or anything else, he loved spending time with his family. Steve was such a devoted husband. For years, up until her passing, he tenderly took care of Pat. They shared a beautiful life together for 54 years. Steve was also a devoted father, grandfather, great grandfather, and friend. His face always lit up when one of his grands came to visit him. He was such a proud Papa! He gave the best hugs and knew how to fix just about anything. We will dearly miss him.

Steve is survived by his son, Jamie (Marynell) Wise of Little Mountain; a daughter, Kelly (A.J.) Fowlkes of Prosperity; granddaughters, Kelsey Wise, Ashley Fowlkes and Ellie Grace Fowlkes; grandsons, Liam Fowlkes and Kendrick (Michelle) Wise and their 2 children, Steve's sweet great granddaughters, Brooklynn Cory Wise and Wrenlee Grace Wise. Steve is also survived by his big brother Larry Wise.

He was predeceased by his wife Carolyn Patricia “Pat” Wise, his big sister Allene Dawkins and big brother Roy Wise.

Visitation will be at Colony Lutheran Church's fellowship hall on Saturday, March 15th from 10:00am-12:00 pm. Steve's wishes were to be buried with Pat. Immediate family will have an intimate gathering after visitation to lay him to rest with her.

The family asks that memorials be made in lieu of flowers to Prosperity Rescue Squad (118 McNeary Street, Prosperity, SC 29127), or Hospice and Palliative Care Foundation (P.O. Box 151, Drayton SC, 29333) to help give the gift of care to others in need.

The family would like to extend special thanks to the staff at White Oak of Newberry and Shasta Freeman, his nurse with Agape Care of Greenwood (who through the last few years has become like family) as well as the rest of his hospice team for taking such excellent care of him and the family over the last 18 months.
