Remembering Steve
Steve Woods, a man whose life was marked by courage, generosity, and an unyielding love for
his family and friends, passed away on October 25, 2024, in his hometown of Cleveland, OH, at
the age of 70. Born on May 20,1954, to Leroy and Mary Dean Woods, Steve grew up in a lively
household alongside his siblings Troy, Leonard, Glenda and Cynthia. His life was one of
devotion and service, marked by the deep relationships he formed and the lasting impact he
had on all who knew him.
Steve's early years in Cleveland were the foundation of a life characterized by resilience and
determination. After completing his education at John F. Kennedy High School, he enlisted in
the United States Army in 1972, serving his country with honor and receiving the National
Defense Service Medal. Upon being honorably discharged, he returned to Cleveland, embraced
his faith, and became a cherished member of Zion Chapel Missionary Baptist Church.
His entrepreneurial spirit led him to establish a successful house painting business, showcasing
his exceptional talent and work ethic. Steve's hands were rarely still, as he continued to paint
homes with precision and care until his health no longer allowed for it.
Steve's personal life was rich with love and joy. He married Rose Weeks, and together they
welcomed daughters Camille and Cherice. After his marriage to Rose ended, Steve's daughter
Romeshya was born, adding more love to life. Later in life he found love again with Vivian Doss.
They married on May 12, 2007 and he embraced her 2 children Shelly and Altovese as his own.
For 19 years, Steve and Vivian created unforgettable memories, exploring the world with
enthusiasm and a sense of adventure.
Steve's life was a tapestry of varied interests. A connoisseur of cowboy films and
documentaries, he appreciated the simple pleasures of a good story. His impeccable sense of
style was evident in his choice of attire, always complemented by matching hats and shoes.
Music filled his soul, and he was a regular at the Chicago Blues Festival and Cincinnati Jazz
Festival. A man of spirited hobbies, Steve also had a love for the thrill of gambling, finding joy in
the turn of the cards and the spin of the slots. Everyone who ever cruised with him always knew
where to find him...in the ships Casino. For his last harrah, Steve celebrated his 70th Birthday,
trying to win big in Las Vegas.
Steve's legacy is carried on by his beloved wife, Vivian Woods; his treasured sister, Cynthia
Block; his daughters, Camille Woods and Cherise Gaston; his daughter and son-in-law,
Romeshya and Nakado Marlow; his stepchildren, Shelly and Erika Vanzant, and Pastors
Altovese and Phillip Coe Jr.; his grandchildren, Kenya (Dawud), Brook, Antonio, Romello,
Robert, Warren, Royalty, Chase, Phillip III, and Nyla; and his great-grandchildren, Halo, Enzi,
Haven. His memory will also be cherished by beloved cousin, Michael Woods; special nephew,
LeRoy Woods; special niece, LaShanna Woods and his aunt, Bessie Owens. Steve's parents,
Leroy and Mary Dean Woods and his siblings Troy, Leonard and Glenda preceded him in death.
Steve Woods lived a life that embodied courage, love, and generosity. His presence was a gift
to those around him, and his memory will be treasured in the hearts of his family and friends
forever. As we bid farewell to Steve, we celebrate a life well-lived, a journey complete, and a
legacy that will continue to inspire for generations to come.
