It is with both sadness and gratitude that we share the peaceful passing of Steve Grube, 62, of Eugene, OR on October 8, 2024.
Steve was born January 1962 in Montclair, New Jersey to John and Frances Grube. He grew up in Highland Lakes, New Jersey with his 3 siblings. He attended Vernon Township High Schoolwhere he discovered his love of running and was recently inducted into their athletics hall of fame. He ran collegiately for Glassboro State College and in 1985 began his career as the head cross country and track and field coach at Ramapo College.
Steve and his wife Renee married in 1990 and live in Eugene, OR, aka "Track Town USA" where they raised their two daughters, Laura and Regan on the Grube farm. Steve loved his daughters deeply. Steve received his Masters degree in education from the University of Oregon and became a beloved teacher and coach at Crow Middle/High School. He led Crow through many successful years and his influence inspired the next generation of runners and coaches. Besides the titles and records, the great sense of community within running has been a bright and strong thread woven throughout Steve's career as a runner and a coach. Steve ran countless races over the years, running every distance from 5k road races to competitive marathons. When he wasn't teaching or running, Steve could be found reading, supporting his favorite sports teams, sailing and taking trips to "Camp Grube" on Lake Champlain in NY.
He was preceded in death by his mother Frances. Steve leaves behind his loving wife of 34 years, Renee and daughters Laura and Regan Grube; father John Grube; sisters Diane (Mike) Falvey, Carol (Bill) Izer; brother John (Catherine) Grube, and many beloved nieces and nephews.
There are no services planned at this time but the family plans to honor Steve at a future date/time.
The Grube family is extremely grateful for the support of the many friends and relatives that have lifted Steve up over his 18 year courageous battle with cancer. In Steve's memory, please consider a donation to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center or just get out there and find a 5k to run!

I lived in Highland Lakes in the late eighty's and met Steve while we were both running around the lake. I jogged merely to stay in shape. I never dreamed of racing, but Steve convinced me to enter a 5k and I was blessed to become one of Steve's many running buddies. Steve was so smart and funny that he made workouts fun. Once we encountered bear cubs as we were running through a state park. Steve casually told me that I didn't need to outrun the bears: I only had to outrun him! Fat Chance!!!
With Steve's help, I eventually was able to run marathons. He was the best coach that I have ever known!

My youngest, Dennis, was at Ruth's preschool in Veneta and became friends with Laura in the 90s. Through them I met Steve. He was a great father and I was drawn to his calmness and sense of humor. They lived across the road from NW Garden Nursery so he said his yard was over there, across the road, in the beautiful garden. He told me he would love to say he became a stay at home Dad because his wife had a better job than he did, but the truth was she had the ONLY job. So sorry to learn of his passing and sure wish I had been better at keeping in contact with him and his family.
