Stephen Von Harris, age 81, of Hamlet, NC, passed away peacefully in his home on March 7th, 2025. He was a loving husband, family member, and friend who touched the lives of all who knew him.
Born on July 22,1943 in Boiling Springs, NC, Steve was the son of the late Harold Vaughn Harris and Frances Blanton Harris. After graduating from Crest High School in Shelby, NC, he pursued his passion for woodworking and design at Appalachian State University, earning a degree in Industrial Arts and Drafting. It was at Appalachian State where Steve's natural talent for teaching and inspiring others first became evident.
After completing his studies, Steve moved to Hamlet, NC, where he would spend the majority of his career as a respected teacher of Industrial Arts at Hamlet Junior High. For many years, he shared his love of woodworking with his students, guiding them with patience and care. Steve was also a lifelong mentor to many of his students, offering guidance and support long after they left his classroom, shaping their lives with the lessons he instilled in them.
In addition to his dedication as a teacher, Steve was a faithful member of First Baptist Church of Hamlet. He served in many capacities, including as a Deacon, a member of the Helping Hands Ministry, the Building and Grounds Committee, the Sanctuary Choir, and Sunday School.
A gifted wood craftsman, Steve created beautiful pieces for his church, family, friends, and members of his community. He was well-known for refinishing family heirlooms, restoring them to their original beauty.
Steve also enjoyed playing both guitar and fiddle, and sharing his musical gifts with friends and family. Outside of his work and music, Steve also had a love for all things old and was an enthusiastic participant in Revolutionary War re-enactments.
Above all, Steve was a dedicated and beloved member of his family. He is survived by the love of his life, Sandra Roofe Harris, of Hamlet, to whom he was married for 58 years. He is also survived by his siblings: Tena Harris Blanton (Harrill) of Mooresboro, NC; Anna Harris Gales (Terry) of Anderson, SC; Althea Harris Crawley of Boiling Springs, NC; and William Harris (Angela) of Thomasville, NC. Additionally, he is survived by his brother-in-law, Frank Roofe III (Cathy) of Pinehurst, NC, along with many cherished nieces and nephews who will forever remember his kindness and witty sense of humor.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt and sincere gratitude to Lisa Hunt and Jolene Thomas for their exceptional care, unwavering support, and devotion to Steve and his family during this time. Their kindness and compassion provided immeasurable comfort, and the family will forever be thankful for their presence and dedication. The family is also grateful to Richmond County Hospice for their compassionate care and support in Steve's final days.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, March 29, 2025 from 10:45-11:45 a.m. at First Baptist Church of Hamlet, 208 Charlotte St., Hamlet, followed by the funeral service at 12 p.m. officiated by the Rev. Allison Farrah and the Rev. Butch Farrah.
Memorials in Steve's honor may be sent to First Baptist Church of Hamlet, 208 Charlotte St., Hamlet, NC 28345; or Richmond County Hospice, 1119 N US Hwy 1, Rockingham, NC 28379.
