Steve was born in Washington DC on September 7, 1941, the only child of Thomas Herron and Adelaide (Mosele) Herron. His parents moved to Southern California in 1941 shortly after his birth. He graduated from Point Loma Highschool High School in 1959 where his senior class voted him "Mr. Personality."
Steve's love of the sea led him to attend the California Merchant Marine Academy in Vallejo (1959-60), although he decided it wasn't for him and travelled extensively in Europe, working for a time in Germany and studying the language. He returned to San Diego and earned a bachelor's degree in English Literature. Steve moved to Aspen, Colorado, living there for seven years and working as a disc jockey for radio KSKI. He met and married Sue Nelson in the late 1960s, although they soon parted ways. Steve then returned to southern California, working in a ski shop. He became involved in Arthur Janov's therapy technique and met Marianne Robinson. They married in 1977 and moved to Sun Valley, Idaho, opening "Little Annie's" ice cream parlor and having two children. They divorced in 1988. Steve remained in Ketchum, working as a realtor.
He returned to Southern California in 1997, eventually settling in Huntington Beach, CA, working as a realtor and teacher. Steve received a master's degree in ESL education from California State University Dominguez Hills In 2014. He moved to Belmont, CA, in the Bay Area in 2019 and lived there until his death.
