Steven L. Ketchum, 70, of Dixon, IL, passed away on April 9, 2025, surrounded by family, after many years of health issues, ultimately succumbing to his final battle with cancer. He lived a life filled with adventure and a deep love for his family.
Born on November 9, 1954, in Amboy, IL, Steve grew up in the area, attending Amboy and Dixon schools before graduating from Dixon High School in 1972. Following his passion for service, Steve joined the U.S. Army and proudly served from 1973 to 1976 as a member of the 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg, NC.
In 1976, Steve met his wife Lora and they married in 1977, building a life together for 48 years. A devoted husband, father, and papa, Steve was incredibly proud of his children, Matthew and Michelle, and his granddaughters Anna and Lily, who always put a smile on his face and brought him endless joy.
Steve worked at various factories in the Dixon area and retired in 2016 from the Illinois Department of Transportation after nearly 20 years of service. He was an avid motorcyclist and member of Twin Rivers ABATE for 30 years, as well as the Iron Butt Riders Association. His passion for the open road led him to ride over 400,000 miles on two wheels, visiting all 48 continental states. Together Steve and Lora rode their motorcycle and traveled in their classic cars, exploring scenic landscapes, visiting car shows, and enjoying the open road. Joined by friends and meeting new ones along the way, they shared exciting adventures and experiences.
Beyond his love for travel, Steve was a dedicated car and motorcycle enthusiast, always eager to share his knowledge and experiences. His adventurous spirit and deep love for his family were the foundation of his life, creating lasting memories through countless family adventures.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Samuel Ketchum and Emma (Uttenreuther) Ketchum, as well as his brother, Karl Ketchum. He is survived by his wife, Lora (Schumacher) Ketchum of Dixon, IL; his son, Matthew (Erika) Ketchum of Modesto, CA; and his daughter, Michelle (Ketchum) Horst and granddaughters Anna and Lily Horst of Glen Ellyn, IL. His brother, Heinz Ketchum of Flowery Branch, GA; sister, Heidi Ketchum of Belvidere, IL; as well as many nieces and nephews. Steve's legacy lives on in the hearts of his wife, children, grandchildren, and all who had the pleasure of knowing him. His love for adventure, family, friendships, and the open road will never be forgotten.
Special thanks to Dr. Alikhan and his oncology team at CGH Medical Center for the many years of care, and also to Serenity Hospice and Home.
